    Posted: 11 June 2008 at 8:02pm
Having never MCNed a newborn I have no idea where to start with inserts! The gremlins went into pockets at 8 weeks but they were straight into meds and I used prefolds as inserts.

I have a heap of microfibre inserts to use in my smalls, but I don't know how much absorbency I'll need? One insert plus booster? Just an insert?

Can anyone help?

Daniel only needed 1 insert initially. We only started needing 2 at about 6 weeks I think once his feeds really started increasing in amount.

because you have to change them so much emma one would prob do...    but you may find pockets only work as well as disposables (which is really 50/50) at containing the runny stuff!

In the first 6 weeks, when Daniel had a sposie on it leaked about 50% of the time. With fuzzis he leaked maybe once every 2-3 days. With tweedles maybe one a week would leak a teeny bit. The fuzzis had a little gap around one of his legs (he had a skinnier leg) which is why it leaked but still did better than a sposie. They were the only 2 types I used in the very beginning.

I used traditional cloth with wraps that had gussets and I *still* couldn't contain Maya's explosions, I guess it's just one of the fun things about having a newborn

My mum made my sister some newborn size pockets and she said they were heaps better than sposies at containing explosions. She very rarely had leaks that meant a whole outfit change. She used just one insert for the first couple of months and then just boosted with mf cloth from Mitre 10 Mega (sold in 12 packs for around $15 I think!).

Kryssi was quite long and slender so she didn't fit smalls for 4 weeks (I think). At that point she needed two small inserts a lot of the time, or an insert and booster.

It really depends on how often she poops - but 1 should be fine at the very beginning.

If you find there's just a slight gap around the thigh of the nappy, try pushing the elastic back in just a tiny bit so it's sitting upright. It makes the nappy a tiny bit smaller where she needs it. That's what we did with Caitlin but it wasn't long before her thighs filled the nappy out

I only used the microfibre inserts that came with the naps, infact that is still all I use at the moment and Rohann is almost 15 weeks (!!!! where'd that time go) now. I have to say I've never had a poo explosion (*touch wood*), on any of her nappies, prefold, pocket, fitted or even disposables when we had them. So can't really comment on that.

We put Caleb in small peapods at 4 weeks with one microfibre insert and this was fine. No leaks or escaping explosions except when I forgot to point it down, which was actually quite often.

Once he slept for 6 hours in a stretch I added a booster but with the new bamboo inserts we've only just started having to add a booster.
