Topic: Waters breaking Posted: 04 June 2008 at 11:49am |
Ok so I'm at my sisters at the weekend and she asks me if I'm worried about my waters breaking in public.
Well I wasn't worried until then!!!
So is this likely to happen? Has it happened to anyone here? What did you do? Was it awful? and many other questions...

I was safe at home in bed when mine broke. Remember that although every single tv show shows people's waters breaking first, it often doesn't happen like that in real life

Mine broke half way between the bedroom and bathroom, (about 10 feet apart!) but there was no great gush, but have to admit that this time around I am going to keep some clothes in the car closer to the end! Sometimes your waters don't break until you are pushing and sometime MW has to break them.

Mine broke in the car on our way to the hospital. I had been worried about waters breaking in public and carried a towel in my car, which I was sitting on when my waters broke.

I never worried about it funnily enough, and in the end I had my waters broken both times. With the gremlins I did worry about cord prolapse if they broke before Sienna was engaged.

From what the MW said at antinatal classes only 15% of waters break before contractions start and then most of those happen at night in bed or on the loo. I'm not too worried about it. I guess if it happens, it happens. Wont be the most pleasant thing but worse things could happen.

This may be a silly question ... but if your waters break when you're on the toilet (or in the shower?) ... how do you know that they've broken?

Mine broke on the loo, I had just been to toilet (tmi but contractions sometimes make you empty out). Then I had another contraction and the waters broke. I suppose the feeling is much the same as when you feel blood come out with a period except it is a lot more and definitely a gush.
I think its only something like 5% of women who have spontaneous rupture of the membranes most others either happen during active labour or are broken by a midwife/doc.

Mine broke while I was on the toilet. I got up at 3am to go to the toilet, finished wee-ing and then heard a tinkle tinkle noise and knew that it wasn't me wee-ing. It was quite a surprise as it was 8 days early and I was supposed to be a week late like the rest of my family! Contractions started an hour later.
I am glad it happened this way as I definately wasn't prepared for it to happen in public! Hadn't even given it a thought!

I think your mw can give you an idea of the chances... with my first one, my mw told me that most of the time you are in active labour before your waters break. With my second, my mw told me that my waters might break first because of the way the baby was sitting ( a bit prosterior I think).
Both times I sort of heard them break. Its a weird feeling...sort of feels like it should have hurt...but it doesn't.
Im not sure what others were like, but it didn't all gush out for me. There was a definate break and a trickle...(kind of like sneezing and wetting your pants a bit), and then it keeps trickling out .
if you were really worried, you could use those tena pads or a normal supa pad....that would also show you if there was any discolour in your waters too (which is what your mw will ask once they break)

There was a definite "ping" when mine broke. I was in the hospital bed. Nothing came gushing out, I was able to hold it in!! Till I moved position, then it was a case of "have I wet myself, or did they break?" LOL

Mine was broken by the MW at the Hospital.
I never worry about it tho....I think it happens in Public...some might go but most would be quite excited....
I had a friend, we went shopping for some last min baby things and we were walking towards farmers when wham...all over the place. She stood there with this Shock on her face. I was shocked too...but I was like holly crap lets get you to the hospital.....
Some ppl went past asking if she was ok and congrats!! Some just looked a her funny!!
Who cares right??

Haha thats awesome Roksana.
I'm not overly worried about it happening I think the likelihood of being allowed out of the house near my due date is slim anyway as I'm staying with Mum and Dad.
I have other things I'm more worried about, but after visiting my sister I was thinking jeebers I never thought of that!

If mine break at home I think thats what will happen to me, I have HEAPS of pressure down there at times now and its getting worse at night, so I think something similar will happen to me, if my waters break that is.
My mum said her waters never broke and she never had a show with any of us 4 kids, she just started off with contractions.

Well the first time my waters broke on the toilet. I arrived at the hospital absloutley busting. The mw wanting me to pee in a cup and the second I sat down there was a sudden gush and ended up with it all over me.
The second time I had just been sent home from the hospital as things had slowen down. Just as I got into bed and lay down I heard a popping sound. didnt really think anything of it untill i could feel something trickling down my leg. I made a sudden dash for the bathroom and it all came out over the bathroom floor. I kept leaking for ages after which made it pretty hard to get back to the hospital.

Mine broke when I was in bed asleep but I woke up and made it to the toilet before they gushed.
I knew my waters had broken when I peed as well while I was on the toilet. Was a slightly different sensation. Also when I figured out in my sleepy state that my waters had broken, I had to check the colour of the liqua, I also saw the lanugo hairs that had fallen off baby - they were in the liqua. Nobody ever told me about that before!
I guess you just will know when it happens. Also a lot of people's waters never break until they are in established labour and they have to be manually broken by mw.
