Topic: Bedtime sux in our house! Posted: 18 May 2008 at 7:33pm |
This last week Lauren has not been happy with going to bed in the evening.
She screams and screams and screams!! I just get to the door way of her room for bedtime and she starts. Towards the end of last week I started to rock her to sleep, I was desperate to get her to sleep in under 2 hours.
Last night I started doing the CC technique as hard as it is for me. While I type on here she is screaming her head off. I have been in once, now just waiting out 5 mins to go back in and pat her and shhhh to her.
What happened to my perfect baby that used to drop off to sleep the minute her head hit the pillow?
CC sux but I do not want a baby that requires being rocked to sleep every night.
What else can I do other than CC, I am not one to let her CIO out as such? She also does not take a dummy, we weaned that over a month ago.
I always swore I would never do CC or CIO, but also don't want a baby/child that is dependant on being rocked to sleep, so am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
This sux.

Hi Peachy, maybe try the dummy again? What about a bf or bottle in her room before bed? I'm sure you've probably tried these things. Are her teeth hurting her, or is she only upset at bedtime? Hope she settles soon!

um...is she teething? Ella normally goes to bed fine in the evening, but last time she was teething she cried and cried when she got put down. We ended up giving her a dose of pamol and then I lay down on the floor beside her and then she went to sleep Luckily it only lasted the week and then she was back to normal.
Hopefully she goes back to normal soon, I know how frustrating it can be when you don't know whats wrong.

She will not have a bar of the dummy now kabe! She pretty much self weaned, with a bit of encouragement from us!
We do reach for the Pamol as a last resort, which always seems to do the trick. I don't think she is teething though as she hasn't been grizzly or dribbly the past week.
I just wish I could fix whatever is wrong, but I actually think she is just fighting sleep to tell the truth.
I hope its just a phaze!!

Well I reached for the Pamol and it worked, she's just gone to sleep now, sigh.....and she's sobbing in her sleep, don't I feel like a great mother - NOT!!
Who knows what to do, where is the "manual" thats meant to come with them when they are born
She did have a cold last week and her nose is still running a bit, maybe she's still feeling a bit louzy.

Is she still hungry, or is she uncomfortable in any way. I find there are two things that cause my baby not to settle, hunger and/or wind. The hunger is easily solved by just trying to poke more food into her. The wind can be a lot harder to sort out. It used to take 2-3 hours to burp her at one stage, it was so bad.

Big hugs Peachy! The gremlins aren't the best sleepers either, and I ended up doing CC as a last resort. It worked, but I hated every minute of it.
If they do wake, I tend to give them Pamol "just in case", that way I am reassured that they're not crying from pain, then I let them get on with it.

Thanks for your comments ladies. CC sux a$$, I did pick her up a few times and gave her big cuddles as I felt so bad.
She has eaten really well today, 3 big solid meals and 4 b/f and 1 f/f, and I did offer food again at around 8pm, but she was just comfort sucking and I don't want to start that either!
Oh well, another day tomorrow, we'll try again tomorrow night and hope for a better result!

As a baby Michaela was fed/rocked to sleep her whole life but by 10mo it was taking me hours to put her to bed and she'd wake several times a night to resettle. I'd tried CC & CIO and neither worked for me so I did my own variation.
What I did was establish a proper nightime routine (we'd had a routine before but this one became strict with no deviations and I shortened it - no more that 15 mins, and no going back into the family/living area after bath time). She got a story, prayer and cuddles in my nursing chair then I'd put her in the cot. Once she was put down in her cot I'd sit on the floor next to it with my back to her so she couldn't see my face but with my arm flung through the cot bars across her belly so I felt like I was offering some comfort (it also prevented her from standing in her cot). The first night it took me over an hour before she fell asleep, the second night it was 45 mins, the next night took even less and within a week I was putting her in bed awake and leaving the room straight away and she would quietly self settle.

My older kids would wake up with teeth, with Cooper we hear about it for the week leading up to the teeth cutting thru. She could be teething, they don't necessarily have to dribble or have pink cheeks to do that. For the next couple of nights why don't you make Bonjela and Pamol part of the bed time routine? Just to see.

Jack is still rocked to sleep which personally I don't mind. What happened when she had a cold last week? How did she fall asleep during that time? Was it in your arms? Maybe she has formed a new sleep association due to what happened last week. This is how Jack formed his feeding to sleep sleep association which we have now weaned him from. When I feel ready we will wean him from rocking to sleep.
IMO I would wean her slowly from rocking/cuddling to sleep if this is what is happening. Maybe rock her to sleep for a few nights, then rock her till she is drowsy and then out in the cot with shhh/pat if necessary, then slowly less rocking. Anyway that is my suggestion.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Same here Emma.
Sam actually went through a stage of that about Lauren's age as well. After a couple of weeks she went back to sleeping like an angel again and still does most nights. Hopefully it is just a phase and will pass for Lauren as well

I think its a stage...Bella did this for a few weeks at about 6 months, we just let her cry and she never really lasted any more than half an hour. It passed and now falls asleep as soon as her head hits the mattress!!

I was having problems with Kylah doing the same, after i got "another ear infection' ruled out, i tried this method. Put her in bed, stand by the cot for a minute, and dont give her eye contact or talk. Every 45sec to 1min take a step back, and keep going slowly untill you get to the door. May take 10 or so minutes but it worked for me. As long as she wasnt crying when it starts.. Might help :)

Tom did this too and it coincided with a sore throat. He was normal in every other way but as soon as we got near his room he screamed. Pamol seemed to be the only thing that worked and I started worrying it had become a sleep cue.....so I used to just stick a little on my finger and let him suck that...always calmed him down!
We started giving him a warm (quitewarm) bottle just bfore bed and things improved....but I think it was just a phase he grew out of rather than anything we did

Thanks again for the comments and help. I am hoping its just a phase as she is such a great sleeper when she is asleep! This morning she woke at 5:45, then went straight back to bed after a feed till 8:30 as normal and is happy as usual!
I did offer Pamol most nights last week as a last resort because of her cold.
With the rocking her, I rocked her till she was relaxed and drowsy and then put her in her cot, I never actually waited until she was fast asleep and then put her to bed.
I will try a few of the different things you girls have suggested over the next few nights and see what works!
Thanks again, you keep my sane!

If she has a cold, that might be the reason! I think it was with Tom. He didnt like lying flat....even with the cot propped up on lonely planets. I still have to rock him to sleep (or drowsy) sometimes....I figure it gets us to our goal faster therefore makes for a hapier house. (and its really nice now he is older, to have him sleep in my arms)
