Daniels nappies in the last day or so have really offended my nose..

Usually it's just his night time nappy that stinks in the morning which is understandable since it's on him for 13hrs

BUT..

Now his daytime nappies stink. They smell like an uncleaned colt's (young male horse) stable which is totally gross

It's not like his nappies are on for ages during the daytime because he loves nudey bum time so gets tons of it.

Any suggestions on how to hide the smell even a bit?

Has anything changed with your washing routine? Like maybe you're drying indoors or in the tumble dryer now that the weather's colder? Or maybe they're taking longer to dry so staying wet longer (you know that yuck smell you get when wet washing is left in the dryer?). Or maybe it's just detergent build up and they need a good strip? I recently washed all of Leo's nappies on a hot wash (cold rinse first) when he had a bacterial bottom infection and it did wonders to my nappies - they smelt SO fresh after.

I'm not sure what the link is but I find that the fleece in Leo's Foxybots hold smell worse than his other nappies, maybe something to do with the waterproof backing behind it or something? I'm not sure of the explanation but it's just something I've noticed. Doesn't stop me using them though as they're still my favourites

Seb's naps were starting to smell a bit like that a while back, but I found using canestan in every wash helps, I can't remember if you already use it or not, but worth a thought.

Nothing has really changed washing wise. It's really just the smell of his pee. Because he has lots of nappy off time there are quite a few accidents that happen and even those stink real bad. So it's definitely his pee rather than the nappy itself really. At least the carpet I can de-stink straight away lol

Maybe it's teething? My sister's GP suggested that when babies teeth there is a chemical change in their wee & poo that causes nappy rash, so maybe it's causing Daniel's wee to smell stronger? Is he drinking the same amount of liquid that he always has? If he's slightly dehydrated this could cause his wee to smell much stronger too.

Stacey I find the same thing with Rohann (although not when she just wets with her nappy off - only in the nappy), it's almost a kinda 'spicy' smell. I'm not sure what to do about either so I will watch this with interest. One idea though, could Daniel have a tooth coming through?

Is he healthy at the same time?  'cause if he's miserable and feverish I'd say UTI, but he's still his usual self these days?  Maybe a diet thing?  Anything he's been chowing down on more than usual these days?

He's actually having a bit more liquid than normal now hes finally figured out how to suck from his sipper cup that has a straw hehe.

He's healthy, got over a cold last week. I don't think its a UTI cause he doesn't have a temp and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort or anything.

Usually when hes teething his poos go really runny and smelly but he's not doing that at the moment. So who knows, it may or may not be teeth. He's always drooling so I can't use that as a guide lol

If it's a sudden change, and definitely his wee that smells, I'd consider taking him to the GP just to get a professional health opinion. I've had UTI's with no fever before and sometimes we just never know what's going on with our little ones (Leo once had an ear infection with no change in temperature or sleepless nights - I took him to the Dr because he was clingy and sleeping way more than usual!!).

I might call my GP in the morn, he's real busy so I can just grab the collection bag and test stick off him rather than waiting forever to get an appt.

Mummy instinct doesnt think its a UTI though

I have had many an ITU without pain or ever knowing I had one.

Normally if they are drinking more their wee doesn't smell as it is diluted with the water.

Hmmm new food???

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I blame teething then - if there's no other answer we can blame teething for just about anything! lol
