Hi, I am trying to get some food organised before prices increase and am a little unsure about avocado and banana. When I puree these do I do it with water to make it a nice consistency? TIA

You can just mash them together, and use abit of breast milk/ formula if u like. Mashed avacado on its own is a bit sort of sticky/gooey.
ETA- you cant make it in advance, cos they will both go brown and gross. If u are wanting to buy fruit/veges in bulk while they are cheap,...try pears and brocolli, they are both cheap at the mo! You can blanche and freeze the brocolli, or else cook and puree and freeze in blobs on a try then pop in a bag once frozen or use ice cube trays to freeze it in. Puree the pear up and do the same!

Just a warning with the banana, make sure you put a bib on Bella as banana stains brown and can be hard to get out of clothes! Also as another wee tip don't try and freeze mashed potato as it goes really yuck when you defrost it! Something to do with the starch in it I think, can't remember now, some one else might know?
I have just bought some pears and apples today to begin the cooking and freezing process. Harry only just 4 months but going to try and be organised! Tried him with Farex today as he has been waking twice in the night but he is not remotely keen so will leave it a bit for now.
Good luck with the solids, it is so funny watching them try new things, make sure you have your camera at the ready for all the great faces she will make

You can't freeze banana and avocado so would probably not bother with them at this stage. Good first stage weaning foods are pear, apple, carrot, kumera, courgettes & swede. They can all be cooked, pureed & frozen in cubes. I then transfer them to snaplock bags. I find that I need to add abit of water to some of the veges like kumera once defrosted, to make it less gluggy.

Well you can actually freeze banana as I tried it out as a party food (on an iceblock stick and partially dipped in yoghurt). I just peeled the banana and rubbed it with a bit of lemon juice before freezing and it didn't go brown. They were only in the freezer a few days so not sure if they will go brown if left longer.

First foods (kumara, pumpkin, carrot, pears) are all coming into season so should be nice and cheap for quite some months.

Oh gosh I thought you could freeze both? Wouldnt freezing them stop them oxidising?

Ok I found this....................
FREEZING AVOCADOS: I would always freeze in avocado in slices and then take out a slice, mash it up and then serve. The browning seemed to be less than when I mashed/pureed it!
You can also create a bath of:
* 1/2 cup water and
* 2 squeezes-drips of lemon juice
Bathing the slices in mixture will help to retard browning.
**But don't feed citrus or acidic fruits to a baby before 1 yr esp. if your baby gets rashy from other foods! Using a drip or 2 of lemon juice in a puree or to bathe several avocado slices is not the same as pureeing up a few orange slices and serving them!

Me again! Found this too...........
Freezing Banana & Avocado Myth: You can't freeze Bananas and/or Avocados Truth: We are unsure where this myth originated however we suspect it may be perpetuated by parents who have had their banana and/or avocado turn brown when frozen. There is no health/nutritional reason for not freezing bananas and/or avocados.
True, they may turn brown however this browning is natural and unless you began with brown and rotting fruit, the browning is not indicative of rot. Browning is the natural process that occurs as many fruits oxidize and ripen.

Just before you make a huge batch you might want to check that she actually likes them, lots of babies turn their noses up at banana cos of its slimy feel. Spencer wouldn't eat it until he was old enough to have it as finger food.

Topsy, I've frozen avocado & it does seem to go a little brown when defrosted but I thin it down with a little water & the green colour returns. I haven't tried banana yet though.
Good point about the potato. I defrosted some the other day & it was lumpy & kinda gross . It wouldn't mix with milk very well...
