or sometimes not waking up but still screaming.

Is this a "normal" phase? Tom has been really unsettled the last few nights and wakes up screaming. If it is early on in the evening he wakes up but as the night moves into the early hours of the morning he doesnt tend to wake...just scream!

He has had a cold for the last 3 weeks but is pretty much over it...just a bit snotty now and a little snuffly when he first goes to bed.

I cant get him to sleep much during the day now and wonder if he is over tired?

any suggestions would be gratefully accepted!

Do you think they can get addicted to the taste of pamol? I find I have been giving it as a last resort and now think he is expecting it so I hold off then worry that he could be in pain...ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH

Cooper only ever woke up screaming after his 2nd Menz B shot.

Could he have night terrors? Hmmm not sure about the addiction to Pamol either. I would hope not. Maybe thats why you are only allowed to give 4 doses in 24hrs.

What if you introduced a night light? Is there anything in the room that could be giving him a fright?

I feel your pain, Mercedes has done that twice in the past few days. I'm used to Sienna waking, but not Mercedes, it's unusual for her.
I wouldn't worry too much about the pamol, I usually go in and give the gremlins a drink of water, then if they don't settle I give them Pamol, then if they still don't settle a bottle. I did worry about the Pamol but my GP said it's safe and non addictive etc. and I find it reassuring to know that once I've given it to her, she's not screaming from pain at least.
The night terrors is interesting, coz babies do get them, Maya used to get them but not till she was a bit older. They were really scary coz she'd be crying in her sleep, inconsolable, but still fast asleep. A couple of times I had to slap her to wake her up coz it was the only way to calm her down.
The other thing is, if he's had a cold, it could be his ears? Pressure can build up causing pain when they lie down, and it's common for kids to have fluid on their ears after a cold.

So do you think its worth going back to the docs? I have been 3 times already in 3 weeks with this cold but it seems better.

Last night he wasnt too bad....till 4am when he woke and would not be left alone. I ended up sitting in the feeding chair with him asleep in my arms till 6.30. I feel like sh*t!!!

He seems as happy as larry (bloody larry!!!) My gut tells me we need to get on top of the day sleeps as he is only getting about an hour max all day! And he used to be so good. Now he wakes after a sleep cycle and thats it.....but he is still tired.

Has anyone had success going in just before they are due to wake and patting back to sleep? I know this works with newborns but not sure how it works with stubborn little tykes?

Go to the dr in the first instance and rule out whether his cold has settled into his ears and he has got fluid in them (and/or an infection). If you're going to wait until Monday, give him pamol in the meantime.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go on Monday. So far he has been a happy chappy when he is awake and I did get a morning sleep out of him....in my bed! But a sleep non theless and I got one too. I just got him down for another as the first was only 1 hr and he was looking pretty tired during lunch. Normally I would keep him awake to give him his bottle but I figure he will probably only do an hour and I think he needs the sleep more than the bottle at the moment. It took me 15 min of sitting with him in my arms so that is an improvement.

Nikki, i feel your pain. Kylah has done this every night for the last 2 weeks apart from the night before last. Its driving me insane. Her day sleeps are fine but night time has turned to crap! Im taking Kylah to the doc, but have also put phone books under the top of her mattress to have her upright abit.

I agree, it could be night terrors. Maybe ask your GP. Apparently you shouldn't wake them if it is night terrors, however you can wake them gently, your GP should be able to help

Funny, Mac has been doing the same thing for the last 2 weeks. Initially it was 4.30 crying but not awake. now its changed to 2.30 and not awake. Really frustrating. he still sleeps well in the day and hasn't had a cold so really don't know. Am going to Dr's on Monday so will ask then.

Hugs Nikki! It's so not nice. Laura went through a similar phase, and I think it was night terrors - and it was just after she started daycare.
I agree with KylahsMum, and put phone books under top end of the cot. Cause if it is an ear infection, being upright might help. Does he scream when you lie him down, but seem better if he's upright?
My doc said that often bubs get ear infection after they have had a cold, and seem to be getting over things.

Anyway, lots of hugs for a tired mum!

Good luck at the docs tomorrow Nikki and Tom. If he is happy when he's up it suggests it could be something that is worse when he is lying down like ears.

Anyssa did the inconsolable night screaming thing for a few weeks and then stopped (phew). She was crying in her sleep for a bit, but would then wake up soooooo upset that I had to feed her to calm her down. Poor baby, but at least she is not doing it anymore.
