    Posted: 22 April 2008 at 7:38pm
For the past couple of days Bella has refused most of her feeds.
The first morning one is fine but then after that she will only feed for 5mins at the most then pull off. I will continue trying to feed her but she just gets upset and pulls off each time crying.
I feel like she is not getting enough? My boobs feel fuller than normal in the morning and my boobs do let down for her (not overly fast either, just normal) so I just dont know why she dosnt like her boobs as much. Any ideas why she is doing this? I dont want my supply to reduce either.

um don't know what advice I can offer you but . Ella seems to go throuh stages where she gets a bit fussy and won't feed for long and when she was around 5/6 months i was worried she was going to self wearn as she wasn't really interesting in having the boob either, but she did get over it and now feeds fine.

Is she starting to get nosey while feeding? When Ella was around 3 months old she started getting really distracted by the enviroment around her and would only feed for a very short time and then would get distracted and want to play, so I started taking her into her room for feeds and closing the curtains and shutting the door and that seemed to work quite well (still do it now).

If you are worried about your supply reducing you could try expressing a bit of milk after she feeds (always useful to a bit of back up EBM In the freezer).

There's so many things it could be...
do you think she's getting frustrated when the milk doesn't come out as fast flow as the first feed of the day?
are you getting your period back? (the hormone change can make the milk salty)
Is she just not as hungry this week?

Sorry it's such a toughie, hang in there

Topsy sometimes Lauren is satisfied after only a couple of mins. I then offer the other side and if she refuses I figure she's had enough. Lauren normally gets over it within a few days if she's not thaqt interested in food Maybe as Bella's getting more efficient at getting the milk out as she gets older, she's drinking more quickly? Just a thought....

I tend to not worry so much now and about how much she is getting, if she's hungry soon after she soon lets me know!

I would do what someone has suggested and just express some off after her feed to keep your supply up!

Aww Topsy It's horrible when they reject the boob.

Hopefully it's just a temporary nursing strike - A couple of the Jan mummies have had it happen to them.

I agree with the others about expressing off after she stops feeding. Does she seem hungry when she pulls off? When Rowan refuses the boob in favour of the bottle in the evenings she goes nuts because she's hungry. If Bella's not doing that then maybe as Peachy says she's just become a very efficient feeder.

Are you bottle feeding as well? Its just that as the flow inthe bottles comes quicker than the let down, babies can get a little impatient waiting, especially when they are hungry. If you are givning her bottle as well, I would stop that for a bit, to get her used to your let down again.

To make your let down come in a bit faster, think about her and feeding her and wht it feels like etc when you are on your way to pick her up, (positive visulisation, lol) and when feeding her, keep eye contact and rub th eplam of her hand, it encourages sucking. maybe stimulate your own supply a bit.

Feeding strikes are common, and are often over in 3 or 4 days. try soem marmite onyour nipples, even, they love that!

Good luck and don't lose heart!!

As others have mentioned it could be she is more aware of her surroundings now and wants to be nosey, has become more efficient at feeding, teething. As long as she has plenty of wet nappies she is probably OK. Expressing should help keep your supply up.

Also I did read in a Little Treasures that a couple of mums put marmite on their nipples because their babies had started to self wean, apparently after a few times with the marmite they were back feeding as per normal! Don't think you are at that stage yet!

I can't offer you much advice other than to keep preservering with the whole fussy baby thing.. it is probably just that 'nosey phase' that everyone is talking about! Keziah used to do it too, and it gets really frustrating eh? On Off On Off On Off Just EAT already LOL

Harry had a nursing strike for a couple of days, but it doesn't sound like what Bella is doing - he wouldn't go anywhere NEAR my boob, and was screaming and crying the house down anytime he thought I was gonna put him on it.

To me it does sound like she's just being a nosey wee thing and wanting to have a look around (my boy has just started this too ).

I second what Peachy say's! Eva went through a phase of doing that. It appears I was feeding her too often and she just wasn't hungry. I spread out the feeds more and things settled down.

Feed her when she's hungry rather than by the clock... She will probably be stretching her feeds out to 3.5 to 4 hourly by now. She will give you cues and make sounds when she's hungry.

Like Fattartsrock said, go by when she gives you hunger signs, rather than by the clock. You might be able to stretch to 3.5 hours. Eva fluctuates between 2.5 - 4 hours, depending on how she's feeling!

Our plunket nurse told me that at this age, babies could probably handle being fed every 4 hours. But I've kept it at 3 hourly for now. I just find it easier that way.

I hope Bella is more settled (& hungry) today. Liam went through a similar thing about a month ago. It lasted a couple of days only. At the time, I stretched out his feeds a bit so he'd be more hungry when offered the boob. Take heart that she can't be too hungry or she'd feed.

I agree that distraction becomes more of an issue when they get bigger. I can barely even talk when I'm feeding as Liam just pulls off & looks up at me smiling (very cute but not much help!).

Hugs Topsy & hang in there.

Hi Topsy, I'm one of the January mums Bobbie was talking about with the same problem. Olivia did this but she had done it for quite a while and was starting to not gain any weight (or just tiny bits). After trying loads of different things (under the plunket family centre for weeks) we ended up having to supplement her every feed with expressed breastmilk. Because you don't want them to get used to how easy the bottle is, I got this teat from them that has a valve in it so they have to suck to get milk out called a "chu chu" teat. More like what they'd have to do to breastfeed. This worked great, she'd have her first 5 or so minutes on me, we'd try for a bit to get her on again and when she wouldn't we'd top her up and she took this teat really well. Now we are dropping the top-ups as she has started taking both sides again. And I think because of this teat she hasn't converted to the bottle yet either. I think the LC at plunket thought that she'd learnt to just snack, sleep for a few hours then wake up early so she could snack again. So it was a matter of trying to make her eat more at one feed to so she'd last longer in between each feed.

She does still have the odd time when she won't take it but she's generally a lot better. Still very nosey and wanting to see everything It's just awful having to fight to feed them though isn't it? It can get really upsetting.

It may also be that she has had enough. If she is still gaining weight okay and is quite happy otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much. With any luck she will start feeding again properly on her own. I just thought I'd share what we are going through as well to give you another avenue to look into if she carries on.

Good luck.

LOL, same here. If Olivia catches me looking at her, she stops feeding to give me a big smile and starts talking Hard to do when it's so cute.
