Topic: Formula questions... Posted: 15 April 2008 at 9:13pm |
Ok, so we have two different brands of formula. I am mostly still breastfeeding, but we give one or two bottles of formula a day at the moment, and I am seriously thinking that I am going to move from breastfeeding to full-time formula feeding.
My question is, is it bad to use different kinds of formula? We have 2 different brands at home, and we have used one for a while (Nestle Nan) but I can't stand the smell of it... so we have got a can of Karicare Gold as well. I have given her a couple of bottles of it. But since we have still got half a can of the Nestle one left, I want to finish it, not waste it... is it ok to be switching back and forth like that?? If not, then why not? Chloe seems to tolerate them both just fine, so far... but as I said, she still mostly has breast milk.
I don't really like the way the Karicare one goes all frothy either, so was thinking of trying the Heinz one after we finish the cans we have. Am I doing something dangerous by trying out all the different brands, or is it perfectly okay?

I don't believe it is advised to chop and change between different brands as each brand is made slightly differently. We found for example that karicare made Daniel super windy but we only found this out after he had had a few feeds of it in a row. It's best to let their system get use to one type of food (formula) rather than changing all the time.
We ocassionally switch between the gold and non-gold versions of the same brand when the other isn't in stock but we get a few tins at a time.
I personally wouldn't switch brands of formula on a continual basis like that. I'm sure the other ladies can give more advice!

I wouldn't switch back and forth to much. Finish one tin, then use the next.
Its ok to try different brands, but find one she likes and tolerates and stick with it.

MY GP told me that it takes their little tummies and bowels a good few weeks to get used to a particular brand of formula, so prob best to stick with one for a while and see how you get on.

it can cause constipation as well as the body adjust (josh just seems to get constipation every now and then anyway but think we have it under control now) we just add about 1/2 a teaspoon of brown sugar to every bottle when its really bad and have started making all his bottles with an extra 20ml of water. Is Chloe still spilly? We changed to the Karicare thickened formula and josh is heaps better i didnt really notice till i went back to the old birth formula and he power chucked and cleared the bed so now im feeding the old formula to mums cats and put him back on thickened.

Yeah she is still quite spilly... do you get the thickened formula just at the supermarket still? I guess there is something different written on the can? Not sure we will need it though, she seems to spill way less when she has formula rather than breast milk anyway.

Yeah prune juice is great and it's good for them anyway. We use it all the time with Daniel anytime he shows signs of getting constipated

Formula is a vital part that makes up 100% of their food at this stage. It's not a good idea to switch back and forth as all formulas are slightly different and also can be either whey or cassein based - it can cause bubs little tummies to be upset.

Thanks for the advice.
If you have to give them prune juice, how much do you normally give them? And do you dilute it? Just in case I ever need to.

BTW I use s26 gold, and find it really good. It doesn't go all frothy like some of the other brands, I know a lot of mums who use it and like it.
