ok so I bought Megan a toothbrush ..she doesnt have any teeth yet but I want to be prepared...when they first came through did you start brushing then? when should I start using toothpaste..I bought the colgate first toothpaste.
We don't use any toothpaste on Sams. I have had loads of conflicting information, but the most common seems to be not to put it on until they can understand they don't eat it I just started giving Sam her toothbrush to knaw on while I brushed my teeth in the morning and in her bath in the evening. Now that she has teeth she knaws on it first and then we do a proper brush afterwards.
For me initially it seemed important that she found it fun and would giggle hysterically while watching me brush mine and try and imitate. It made the whole process really easy
I got Isla a toothnrush when she got her forst 2 teeth at 5 months, but its actually months beoore the tooth is actually big enough to brush! We were told to use a thin flannel or cloth wrapped around your finger to wipe the teeth, but this usually ended in Isla just sucking the cloth! Wasnt until more like 10 months+ when she would enjoy wathing me brush mine, that we started doing hers regularly too. I would give her the brush to suck on when I did mine.
It was pretty much the same for us as the other ladies have described. DDs first tooth didn't come through until 8 months, and we probably didn't even get her a brush for them until she was 12mos or so. At first we just let her chew on it, and now she LOVES to "bwush" with us in the mornings (and before bed). At the moment we try and get some proper brushing in for her first, and then let her have a go on her own.

I remember seeing a video at Plunket that mentioned teeth brushing. About all I can remember is that if you do decide to use toothpaste you should only use the tiniest tiniest amount to start with. I guess that goes along with Mum2Sam's comment about them knowing not to eat it
Rohan started off great with his toothbrush but the hated it! We tried him n an electric one witha kid's head and he's cool with it again now. We use the Colgate toothpaste but Plunket said to watch for flouride as some of the baby ones don't have enough.
He's going hreat at it now and enjoys the whole experience. We give him his manual toothbrush to play with while he's getting dressed for bed.
