My girl so so tired, but doesn't go to sleep when we put her to bed. She usually has at least 3 short sleeps during the day and then sleeps through the night but for two days now, we get her up for her 1st feed and play for about 1.5 hours then top up and put her to bed after she rubs her eyes etc but then she won't sleep. It just goes on like this all day.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be? I'm at my wits end.

Sunnyhoney Laruen is exactly the same. 3 short one hour naps during the day and thats it! I have given up trying to get her to go to sleep for longer and just let her sleep in the car when I pop out or take her for a walk and she falls asleep whether she wants to or not!

By the time 6pm comes around she is knackered, last fed at around 7pm then straight to bed!

Sounds familiar...but she was so good up until now, I don't get it. It seems to have changed very suddenly. Joy only had half an hour today. The rest of her "sleep" time was spent in her cot either squealing at full pitch or crying.

What do you do with Lauren during the day? Do you sit with her and spend all day with her or do you just put her somewhere to entertain herself and go do stuff (for the most part)???

Is she happy or grumpy during her awake times?

I spend the day moving her from place to place, eg: I start in the morning on a rug on the floor, lots of tummy time and rolling around, she spends about an hour on the floor, when I need to get things done, I pop the TV on for background noise for her. Then at around 9am ish we go for a walk for an hour, she sleeps the whole way round my 5km walk!

Then when we get home I pop her in the exercauser for 20mins or so or the Jolly Jumper, then we go for little wanders round the garden and look at the trees and talk to the cat or I pop her into her highchair with a peice of ice in her mesh feeder, this keeps her occupied for ages!

Then during the afternoon I just rotate these things around again in no particular order, she spends alot of time on the floor and quite often I will lay down there with her and read stories. She is also very into bouncing on my knee while I sing nursery rhymes, although I am struggling to remember all the words!

Basically I get hardly anything done during the day time, she is demanding more and more of my attention. I have just bought a DVD of nursery rhymes to try and see if that will entertain her for atleast 15 mins or so!

She also will not sleep at all in her cot during the day, I pop her into her MB in the laying down postion and she nods of pretty much straight away, I do not rock it either, dont want that habit to start!!! For some reason she will only sleep in her cot at night

Ohhh, I feel so sorry for you Sunnyhoney
When Keziah was smaller we went THREE weeks without a daytime nap.. she was grumpy, rubbing her eyes, ALWAYS hungry and so irritable!!!!
I had stopped wrapping her because she decided she didn't like it.. turns out, she wanted to be wrapped so I tried wrapping again.... VOILA she slept for 3 hours during that 1st nap

*hugs* It's so frustrating isn't it. I'm lucky in the fact that at the moment I generally get one sleep out of B after first wake up and feed, (despite only being a 45 min nap) anything on top of that at the moment is a bonus. I try and keep busy, and like Peachy try to do different things, even if it's just hanging out the washing or checking the letterbox, both take longer with a baby. Unlike Peachy I'm not walking 5k a day, but will often go for a short walk, sometimes he sleeps, sometimes he doesn't

I'm trying hard to just roll with it. He seems to get more upset if I try to put him down for a sleep at the first tired sign. Ironically he's often happy after a short sleep.

She is happy as larry (so to speak) during her wake times. But if she is up for any longer than 1.5/2 hours she starts to get grumpy and there's a bit of eye rubbing and yawning going on...If I put her in her cot she will be quiet for a little while (Mummy thinks woohoo she's sleeping) but then the squealing and crying starts. I find it extremely hard to settle her when she is crying but DH will come in sometimes to help, he akes her from me and there is instant quiet and happy bubba. Sometimes she will go to slepp for him

I find I really need her to have sleeps during the day, as I need the break too. I get quite tired easily and if she is stressed all day then I do too...and I'm embarrassed to say, I have lost the plot a couple of times which doesn't make the situation better. (Probably doesn't help that I'm coming down with a flu)

Could it be teething or tummy upset coz of reaction to some food??? Do you think I should take her to the doctor??

Could you take her for a walk when her sleep is due? Just walk far enough for her to go to sleep and then bring the pram indoors and let her have her sleep in there. I read somewhere that if you can do whatever is needed to get them to go to sleep, so walk in the pram, a drive, whatever, then it gets them use to sleeping in the day and then you can work on getting her into her bed once she is having those sleeps again.
failing that do you have a plunket family centre near by? If nothing else it would give you a day off as they will help you out and you can sit and have a coffee etc.

Hmm, yeah I've been thinking about going. Just a little nervous that they will be all bossy and know it all types like in hospital.

Walking may be an option, however she will sometimes go to sleep but she usually wakes when we get home. Maybe worth it to get her to have SOME sleep, but then it will also tire me out too.

I pretty much feel like a right failure at the mo.

You're not a failure.

I don't know what plunket in your area is like, I took Spencer to the family centre in Christchurch when he was three months and they were absolutely lovely. There were about 5 of us there some with sleeping issues and some with feeding issues. They really helped cos when I got home I had a plan and knew that it could work and that he could sleep for longer than 45 mins.

Perhaps if you took her out in the pram in the morning for a sleep then she wouldn't be as overtired in the afternoon and might go down for that sleep?

Big hugs sunnyhoney!Even though my son is 12 I do remember that sleep deprived tired feeling and it sucks, but you are NOT a failure at all, just a tired out mum.

The things I used to do to get J to sleep were drivin in the car, walk in pram etc, if you have family/friends nearby get them to take her for a couple of hours whilst you sleep. Also could you lie down with her on your bed and have a sleep with her or prop some pillows beside her so she doesn't fall off and let her sleep that way.

More hugs for you

Am about to try a walk and we'll see how that goes. Will be good to get out of the house for a bit too.

She is a very social little girl so sleeping together doesn't work well as it takes ages for her to go to sleep and then I don't sleep very well coz I worry about rolling on her .

Does anyone know if tired signs can change??

sunnhoney I have heard that the Plunket Sleep help that they offer is awesome. My friend took her baby there as he wouldn't sleep anywhere but on her. One day at the sleep centre and he has been the perfect sleeper ever since! She couldn't believe it!

all the best sunnyhoney.

It sounds like you have not changed anything, but Joy has just decided that she doesn't want to sleep - so maybe something has changed with her? I don't know much about separation anxiety, but just throwing that into the mix as an idea as what could be wrong.

From my observations of Anyssa, I think her tired signs do change - she didn't rub her eyes when she was younger, and now she starts to lick her lips as a first sign.

I hope plunket can help

oh Sunnyhoney - you're doing well! I hope you have some success with the family centre - it sounds like that's a good place to start.

Sunnyhoney. I found the plunket family centre really good when Rex was younger. They are so so lovely there too.

Good luck!

By the way, Happy 6 months to Joy!!!!

Well, after talking to Plunket, Joy has slept for most of the afternoon. DH even had to wake her for her afternoon tea. Hopefully this continues!!
We have reverted to wrapping her and have draped a sheet over the rail of her cot (to keep out some light and she can't see us when we check on her) and now close the curtains for her daytime sleeps - working so far

Thanks for all your ideas & support.
