Topic: Babys position changing Posted: 18 March 2008 at 4:22pm |
I wondered if anyone had experienced their baby changing positions from head down to breach towards the end of their pregnancy?
Had a very rough night last night with baby's movements being quite painful and I am concerned baby may have turned?
Baby has been head down and in position (but not engaged) for atleast the last 8-10 weeks and for some reason I have this horrible feeling babys laying across my stomach rather than head down bum up.
My next mw appt isn't until next Wednesday and just wanted some experiences of my fellow ohbaby mums and mum2bs seeing I have to wait so long!

I had been told that my baby was head down but not engaged and then at 34 weeks and 6 days I had a leak of waters, saw my back up mw who said babies head had engaged and that it had cause a small tear (quite common normally repairs itself in a couple of days), my waters broke completely and I went into labour 12 hours later (the other thing that can happen after a leak) and found out he was not engaged and that he was breach. He was extremely active that afternoon, with big lumps sticking out of my belly here there and everywhere. I still have no idea if the mw got it wrong in the morning or if he turned that afternoon. All I do know is that when I had a scan a couple of days later he was well and trully stuck, my waters had completely gone and he was bum engaged and head and feet up by my ribs. (worse type for turning).
Anyway that probably doesn't help at all, but I do think that it is quite possible that he moved that day.
Fingers crossed that baby is still head down.

My baby was head down, ready to go at 36 weeks and then at around 37 weeks I started to get really mild period type pains that came and went every 10 minutes or so. It stopped after the weekend and when I went to see my midwife that week she couldn't find his head!!! Turns out he had done a full turn and was knees first with a foot stuck under my pelvis! Well needless to say it was far too dangerous for me to even go into labour as there was a risk of cord prolapse (when the cord comes out first) And I ended up having a c-section at nearly 40 weeks. I was told it was near impossible for him to be turned at such a late date and there wasn't really much room for him to do so!
Good luck!

Well no leaking - yet?
Oh man I don't know what to think... usually I can feel my tummy and go, "yeap, little bum, the back, feet over there...." but I can't tell today???

Whoops, sorry I didn't mean to scare you! Kneeling breech babies are very rare! But yeah, think positive, even though I had a c-secion everything went really smoothly and I feel I had a really good experience. Even if your baby has turned breech, they might be able to turn them around.

My labour kept stopping and starting so I ended up having an elective c/s at 38 weeks. I was prepped for an emergency one 3 times (or was it 4 ) which sounds scary but it wasn't it was just frustrating cos I wanted the baby out and they wanted to keep him in and each time I started labouring it would stop so they would wheel my back up to the maternity ward where I would sit with the hump. They said I had an irritable uterus possible caused by his position, lack of waters etc. Oh and with me they didn't want to attempt to turn him because of the reduced waters and the risk of breaking them again and him ending up stuck transverse.

Hey Wendz, all the best with baby my MW thought Ashlee had turned at around 39ish weeks, and sent me for a scan. She fully freaked me out as she was feeling my belly, and said 'OH NO! I think she might be breech!' and that scared me! I got in for my scan that day and she had me worried for nothing because Ashlee was still head down.
Do you think your MW would be nice enough to send you in for a scan just for peace of mind?

When is your next m/w appt? If it's not in the next few days, I'd give her a call and tell her what you suspect, she can either do an exam or order a scan to check bubs presentation. The good news is, if bub has turned transverse (sideways) then it's easier for him/her to turn back the right way. The bad news is it's impossible to deliver a transverse baby vaginally. But most transverse bubs do turn head down either on their own, or with an ECV (turning in hospital).

When I saw my midwife and she suspected that Sam was breech she went and got another midwife to check me too. They both decided it would be best if I had a scan. I was sent for one the very next morning so I had plenty of time (2.5 weeks) to prepare myself for what was going to happen.

About 3 weeks ago I felt the baby moving around ALOT - big roley movements and was then getting hiccups one side and kicked in the other. I was really worried as the baby has definately been head down since 26 weeks. I think she stayed lying accross my belly for about a week (it was a nice relief not having to put up with being kicked in the ribs and the pressure was taken off my bladder) and then decided to just pop back into position head down again. The mw was slightly worried but said the baby just felt like a bit of a swim. Shes now engaged and all ready to go, hopefully this babys not going to keep me waiting too much longer.

Wow good luck daizy! You don't have to wait long at all!
I too have noticed an ease off my bladder and I don't need to go to the bathroom anywhere near as much as I normally do. I think baby has definately moved position, but I just don't know which way?
I think I am just going to try wait it out until my appt next week. Hopefully with the long weekend coming up it will go by quickly.

Just backing up what Renee said - I too had a breech presentation (extended not kneeling) and had a c-section. Because I knew early and had time to prepare myself mentally for it I had a really positive birth experience.
Hopefully if baby has turned then it might turn back again for you (especially if it's transverse at the moment) but if not and you do have to have a section please be assured that it definitely isn't a horrible thing and you will still love your bubba just as much - and on the plus side you'll get some say into his or her birthday

Thanks bobby. I will keep that in mind. I just have to be prepared for anything I suppose.
I think I might try lay down when I get home and have a little feel of my tummy. I am getting ALOT of movements right down low and Im worried they are little feet.
If I am still concerned tomorrow, do you think I should just text my midwife to let her know my concerns so she can decide if she wants to see me earlier than my next appt? I mean, I could be completely wrong and I don't want to waste her time..

Yep I think you should call her if you are still concerned. It's what she is there for and will help put your mind at rest (either way, at least you'll know fr sure).
Best of luck, I hope bubs is just playing and moves back down into position

Better to let her know than worry all weekend about it.
I could feel kicks everywhere and ones that felt down low, but his feet where most definitely up by his head, he was sucking his toes 2 mins after being born and at one of my scans....so cute. I think what I could feel down low must have been knees or elbows or hands or god knows what, sometimes i could have sworn there were 5 babies in there.

Okay. If I still think baby has turned tomorrow, I will send her a text and let her know my concerns and she can decide from there. I think Im only concerned as Im 36 weeks, and well... baby could really come at any time couldn't he/she?
With my track record though he won't want to get out of his mummys tummy for a while!

My baby was breech for most of my pregnancy until about 36 weeks, when she turned. I could definately feel her turning. Hoewever, about a week before I was due she turned breech again. During labour my MW gave me some tablets to put under my tongue (to get her to turn), and she turned yet again before beng born!

The other thing is that if she has turned and is extended breech (feet up by head) then you may be allowed to birth her vaginally anyway - it's only first babies where it's totally not an option.
Near the end I swore I could feel Rowan's feet kicking me down low but her feet were always by her head - the MW told me it was probably her bum and she was bouncing up and down - so it's pretty hard sometimes to tell where the heck they are in there.

Actually I was given that option even though Spencer was my first, but strongly advised not to take it. In hindsight he had a tiny head and was only 6lb 2 so I probably could have done it. (vaginal birth that is)
