Hey There,

I am new to this forum, Husband and I have decided to start trying for bubs #1.
I just have a few questions, and i have read through a number of posts already up before i posted my own.

1) How soon into your pregnancy do you start purchasing: eg. prams, carseats

2)How long normally before and after bubs does the average person take off work.

3) How long before and during pregnancy should you take folic acid?

That's all the questions i have for now.
Nice to 'meet' you all and i look forward to chatting to you in the future.

Dani

Hi welcome to Ohbaby.

Bits for baby I started purchasing from about 4 months onwards, was scouting trademe for bargains, I had everything bought by 30 weeks (with a few exceptions).

My job is manual so I finished at 32 weeks, originally planned to go to the 36 then decided 34 would be better but then got sciatica so took my annual leave and left at 32 weeks. I'm back at work but only casually so that I don't need to use childcare, I started back when he was about 4 months.

I think it is recommended to start taking folic acid at least a month before concieving. I just took it the whole time that I was TTC, so had been taking it for 5 months before it finally happened.

Good luck

Welcome Dani

You need to have folic acid in your system really early as the neural tube (the key thing folic acid is required for) is formed around a week after conception - before you even know you're pregnant, so that's why you need to start as soon as you start TTC, and continue for at least the first few months. You can get it quite cheaply (about $6/bottle) at the supermarket, but you might need to take two a day to get the recommended 800mg.

Good luck!

Welcome to OhBaby Dani!

1. We started buying things from around 26 weeks from memory.

2. With Ollie I left work at 36 weeks and returned fulltime when he was 5 months old. With this bub I left work at 28 weeks as I wanted to spend time with Ollie and was somuch tired-er this time around. Not sure when/if I'll go back this time, will depend on finances.

3. As the other ladies have said, start taking folic acid as soon as you start TTCing and continue for the first 3 (I think) months.

All the very best for your ttcing journey!

Hi Dani

Welcome to OB and good luck for TTC.

1) we started acquiring items for Michaela before we started TTC but we actually started shopping for her around 5 months

2) How much time off you have before and after is a personal choice and one you may change your mind about too. I worked until 8 hours before Michaela was born (not quite what I'd planned I was hoping to get a weekend in and have her on the Monday but she arrived on the Friday instead). I had a great pregnancy and a cushy office job so I was happy to work until the last minute because I only took 5 months off work and wanted to spend as much as possible of that with my baby.

3) As mentioned by the others it's best to start taking folic acid now. You may already be taking it if you have multivitamins but most only contain 300mcg and the recommended dose for pregnant women (and those TTC) is 800mcg.

Hi there I am new as well but im ttc #2

I started buying at about 3 months I laybyd stuff then paid it off and repeated the cycle lol I worked in a nursery department and across the rd from pumpkin patch so that didnt help. But by the time was 30 weeks and tired I had everything and didnt need to worry about it and there wasnt a huge expense at the end because I did it gradually from the beggining. This time I have already started buying and im not preg yet lol (hopefully I am)

I left work 6 weeks before I had my baby but 4 weeks before I was due but she was two weeks late lol I am still on my years maternity leave for a month!! Not going back though I had no probs working up to that point just sat down alot hehe

Im not sure about the folic acid lol

Hey,

Thanks for all your replies.

I just started taking my folic acid yesterday, however mine is only 400mcg or whatever the unit is. Should I go and get some 800mcg stuff instead?

Yeah I was a bit embarassed because i have already bought a car seat!!! Was on sale at baby factory, felt a bit stupid because i'm not, well i don't think i'm pregnant right now. But now i know other people buy a little bit before so they can start early without having big lump expenses coming out.

Thanks so much for all the replies. Everyone here is so friendly and its easy to ask because we all want to talk about the same stuff hehe

Hi and Welcome.
I started buying stuff for Zoe before I was pregnant as well. I also brought tons of Pregnancy clothes before I was pregnant too. But I got so huge that I didn't fit most of it by the time I was 20wks.

Hey Sally,

Yeah I only started this month as well. Went to the doctors yesterday and she prescribed me the folic acid as well.. For now I can continue taking two a day of my 400 mcg until that is complete though.

That is exactly what i thought about starting shopping early hehe...!

Best of luck for you too!

Dani :)

Hubby and I were going to start TTC (number 1) again this month (had a miscarriage last week), but my doctor just rang me to see how I am (she's so nice ) and she really really really wants me to wait till I've had my next period before we try again I WANT ONE NOW!!!!! But I feel like I should do what she says or I might have another miscarriage if I just go ahead and try to get pregnant this month... Silly gut feelings. I really don't want to have another one of those so better do what the doctor ordered!!

I'm taking a 800mcg folic acid from the pharmacy, it was $11 for 120 tablets, so 4 months worth.

Oh so sorry to hear that rachel. *big hug* for you.

Sounds like your doctor really cares about you and your wellbeing as well as your future children.

All the best for when you start trying again
