I was wondering if this is routine? does everyone have to do the sweet drink and have a blood test or is it only if they think you may have it...?

I know my mum was boarderline GD with me..

I think its routine. All my friends have had to have the test, whether there was a chance of having it or not.

The test is not that bad either, its sounds worse than it is!

Yup, it's pretty much routine. I did it 3 times with Maya coz of her size and twice with the gremlins coz of the increased risk of GD with twins.

I am the only person I know who didn't have this test, didn't even know it existed till after I had him. God knows why I missed out, didn't get any 28 week bloods either

Yep, it's routine at about 28 weeks, and they may do it earlier if you're showing signs but the m/w should tell you if there's a risk. It's OK, just be prepared for the hour wait!

I didn't have the test. My midwife talked through the risk factors (in terms of being a likely candidate) and said it was up to me, I didn't appear to be at high risk - I said no. The POAS check up things show glucose don't they? So would that pick it up eventually if it happens?

Oh yep, thanks for your replys. My MW hasnt mentioned it as yet, i see her tomorrow so maybe she will then. Its just cos my mum was boarderline GD while preggers with me i thought I might be more at risk of getting it?

You could be. family history is one of the risk factors.

Hope you don't have it Sheza, the first test is a picnic compared to the second test (if the first results are not good). Good luck!!

I did the bloods but I had had a huge breakfast of bircher muesli with yoghurt and fruit just before I went so I failed the test big time! Had to do the second test, which was just awful (sorry, I hated it so much and felt like a pin cushion).

Thing was that my DH is a type 1 diabetic and I tested constantly throughout pregnancy using his testing gear and things were fine. I also had an argument with my specialist about having to do the second one because I knew it was fine - it was just the big breakfast I ate! Needless to say, I said I told you so when I got the results and he looked a bit sheepish.

I have told my midwife my mum nearly had it with me, so i guess if she is concerned she will say something to me.

I did the three hour test twice with Maya, once before my 28 week polycose and once after. It sucked, the drink is even worse than the polycose one and I have dodgy veins so trying to find enough space to take three separate samples was a nightmare.

I did the three hour test twice as well. It was so yucky I fainted during the last lot of bloods as the medlab lady was really rough with me. Not fair on a 38 week pregnant lady!

It is super sweet. It does taste a bit like lemonade, but I found it really hard going. I actually threw the first lot straight back up again coz with the hyperemesis I couldn't cope with too much fluid at a time, especially that sweet on an empty stomach

I never had it either, just the 3 sets of normal bloods. I guess my bloods looked fine so there was no need to have a further GD test.
