Bella has glue ear at the moment, but doesn't need antibiotics, but from what I understand, its just something some babies are prone to as their immune system builds up. For Bella, it was because she started daycare, so caught her first cold almost immediately, which resulted in the glue ear and the doctor told me once they start daycare/school, children catch on average 7-12 colds a year, and unfortunately, this can lead to other infections (ear/nose/throat/chest, etc.)

Sorry not much help

Oh that's a pain We only had one set of have recurring ones. There's not too much you can do in preventative. Basically they are a side effect of someone with small ears (ie a baby) getting congested with colds. Draining the fluid away is the best thing you could focus on. So during "cold" time, steam them up, vaporise them, everything you can to beat the cold/congestion. Elevate the head of the cot to help the ears drain. When a bubba has an ear infection they will be more comfy sleeping on their front, particularly with their knees tucked under their tummy. So allow for that too.

Emma Rose has had heaps of ear infections, and also had glue ear and build-up to the point that she needed grommets (which she got last August). We haven't had an ear infection since.

The key with ear infections is to treat them as soon as you can. Ear infections are usually related to upper respiratory infections. Basically, babies' eustacian tubes (the things that connect their inner ear to theithe backs of their noses) are shaped differently than those of adults. They're short and flat, which makes it easier for bacteria to travel into the tubes. This results in increased mucous production and inflammation -- an ear infection. Glue ear is when the mucous builds up and blocks the tube. If a child gets recurrent ear infections and they are left untreated, the mucous can build up on itself and keep the tube blocked, which means potential hearing loss and language development delays. That's what happened with my child.

There isn't much you can do to prevent ear infections, unfortunately. While it's true that not all children will need antibiotics to recover from them -- there has been research to the effect that ear infections generally clear up without medical intervention -- because you don't personally know what the shape of your child's Eustacian tubes are, it might be better to just go for the antibiotics rather than risk repeated ear infections that might build into glue ear and cause something more serious.

I wrote an article about grommets here, which includes some info about ear infections. I'd get in touch with your child's GP for other advice and options -- hang in there!

What Katherine said! My Mercedes had two ruptured ear drums from glue ear so I took her to a specialist and she had grommets put in at 11 mths. The specialist checked Sienna's ears while we were there and she had two severely infected ears as well that we would never have known about coz she didn't seem to have any symptoms (fever, grizzling etc.). She got grommets at 13 months.
I am so pro-grommets. My SD is now moderately hearing impaired as a result of persistent glue ear so I pushed to get Mercedes looked at as soon as she started having problems. It's such a minor procedure, both girls had surgery around 8am and we were home by 9.30am.
We also had their hearing tested coz glue ear can cause hearing probs, but both passed.

What katherine said. Andrew got his first lot of Grommets at 21 months after having 12 ear infections in those 21 months.

Last year in November we went back into hospital and had them re inserted as after they fell out we had 4 ear infections in 3 months .

Keep an eye on them, and record them when they are so if you have to see an ENT you have the info for them, and also their hearing - Andrew had shocking hearing when they fell out as his tubes were blocked with fluid.

Like Emma I am so pro grommets its such a simple op and doesn't take all that long (so long as its just the grommets) and the next day they are back to normal, I had them out in as a baby and if Josh needs them then he'll have them put in too.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Gina has had 1 ear infection so far and I did give her anitbotics - the full course - just in case.
Our GP suggested we try & keep her ears dry when taking a bath - apperantly plain water is OK but soapy water can cause trouble. We have followed that advice - we either bath her in plain water or stuff little cotton balls to cover the ear opening - we have not had another ear infection since.

ETA: Gina was around 9-10 months when she got the ear infection

Ella had so many ear infections in her first year it was rediculous.  The issue with her is that like her mummy (who yes, has some hearing loss thanks to the same persistant problem as a kid) she has unusually narrow tubes in her ear.  We're in-between specialist visits at this stage.  The first one I saw advised me to treat any colds that she gets immediately, to prevent congestion building up - it won't help the cold or 'flu pass any faster, but treating the symptoms may prevent Ella getting ear infections each time.

Also, don't be stingy with the pamol when baby has an ear infection - I can tell you they make a kid miserable.  I remember just needing to lie on the couch and have a cry about it when I had them.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice Luke is looking much better and back to his old self. It's good to know about the link with glue ear willbe aware of that now and the possibility of grommets in the future if he needs them.

Thanks Katherine for your advice and the article was great easy to read and answered lots of questions i had on grommets.

Hopefully this is his last ear infection but if not then we will cope... Didn't reliese it's so common for kids to have them.
