I didn't i kept it in the whole time, right thru pregnancy, delivery and afterwards - you can go to the piercing places and get flexible plain plastic ones, which is what i did. This i did for both pregnancies.
From what i can tell and have heard, all the ones who took theirs out end up with terrible icky stretch marks from where the hole is. I didn't have that, sure the skin on it got very stretched and kinda thin but it's gonna do that anyway, better to have the bely bar to support it that just let it stretch and leave marks i say.
I loved having a kewl belly bar in, and ive had mine for 7 yrs so didn't want to take it out!

If you use bio oil etc and use it around the hole it wont stretch :) the retainers arent the prettiest, but they work! Man I sold a lot of those when I had my shop.

Yeah my friend said I should take it out as It will scar, and I said I dont want to take it out, Ive had it since I was 16! Im 25 now.
I have been from the first weeks of pregnancy applying body butter to my belly and belly button, so that should help? I always rub the cream around my piercing.

Great pix mum2paris!
Other thing is that I hyave a really deep belly button and its only just starting to pop out now, and you can hardly call it popping out, I can see the middle of my belly button clearly now thats all.

I still have mine in & I'm at 36 weeks. This is the third pregnancy that my piercing has endured lol. The only time I had a problem was when I had a ring instead of a bar.

Yeah I was thinking a ring would be worse, at least with the bar it has room for stretching, and you can get longer bars too.

I took mine out with first pregnancy at around 24 weeks and at the time I thought the hole would close but I was able to put it back in again pretty much a couple of weeks after the birth so that was great - have still got it in this time around but might take it out once my belly button pops out.

Depends if your belly button pops out - mine never did but I still took mine out and had it out for about 6-7 months (was about 4months when I took it out on m/w advice). Put it back in just the other day, had to pop the bottom but the hole was still there. And I've only had mine for about 7 years so yours might be OK.
My tongue piercing didn't even close up and I had that out for a month (had to take it out as they thought I was going to faint and could've swallowed my tongue ) and it was fine when I put it back in. That's only 5 years old and I'm pretty sure they say that they close up within a few days. Not mine!
