Topic: Not sure what to do..... Posted: 22 January 2008 at 8:16pm |
DH has started giving Lauren a bottle of EBM for her 9:30pm feed as I have so much of it in the freezer and it gives him time to bond with her.
Also another reason for doing this is my boobs feel so empty in the evenings. I know I still have milk in them, but its really draining on me b/f that last evening feed. After the 9:30pm feed she sleeps through till around 6am.
Anyway, my question is should I express at 9:30pm (not sure I would even get anything out lol) to keep my supply up or can I just forget about it till the morning and express around 7:30am to re-stock the freezer? I don't want to mess with my milk supply and I am often engorged at the 6am feed and then it comes down and is back to normal for the day.
Any thoughts/advice appreciated!

i would express in the morning is that is when your is at it's best quality and you have more of it so it's easier to get it out.

I'd say flag the 9.30pm express and just express in the morning when your supply is at it's biggest. Your supply will adjust to the demand so you'll end up making more for the morning and less at night.

Thanks for your replies, I thought that might be the best idea to wait for the morning!
I am going to be sooo engorged by then!

I would try expressing at night, even just for a little bit. I found that if I didn't, I could't sleep well and would wake up in the middle of night because I was too uncomfortable. Also I've heard milk is quite fatty at night so it keeps bubs satisfied thru the night but that may be bull.

You could just try expressing off a little at night so you sleep well and arent too sore in the morning, then cut it back as your supply adjusts. Tho it prob wont take too long to adjust, its just like when they drop their night feed anyway.

Well I didn't express last night, but did so this morning at 7am and got plenty off for her evening top up. Lauren woke at 8:30pm last night so we gave her the top up then and put her straight back down and she slept till 6:20am! I am thinking that maybe my milk is not so good for that last feed anyway if I got her to sleep longer on a top up!
I actually wasn't too engorged this morning either, just my normal lumpy morning boobs happening!

Hey peachy, I am doing the same thing with Luke and was wondering the same thing! I didn't express last night, cos it is alot harder at night, but did this morning when I fed him at 7am and got nearly enough for tonights feed - I don't have alot stored up, I am only expressing what he needs for that night at the moment...

Hey Bel does Luke take a whole feed at that last feed? Lauren only takes 100mls and she seems satisfied, a normal feed for her during the day is around 150mls at the moment.

Well because this is the only bottle I give him, I don't know how much he would normally drink - but I have been increasing it each day - last night he took 120mls... Trouble is he falls asleep, so the other night we battled to keep him awake to drink (with help from an icecube) but last night I just let him have a 10 minute power nap and then gave him the rest - worked well and was easier than trying to keep him awake.
