Topic: Pregnancy vitamins Posted: 20 January 2008 at 9:24pm |
Just curious, as I noticed in another post someone mentioning Elevit (pregnancy supplement). Do most pregnant women take this kind of vitamin now?
I just took basic folic acid when I was pregnant. My doctor said that was all I needed to take.
Also, for those of you taking/have taken this supplement, do you usually take vitamins? Or just while pregnant.
I have vitamin C when I have a cold/in the winter...that's it really

I took Elevit as soon as I found out I was pregnant.
I took basic folic acid for 18 months before I conceived.
The Elevit only lasted for 3 months as my iron levels were really low so I came off them to take an all iron supplement.
My GP said it was good to take Elevit, if I could afford it, but folic acid and a good diet are all you really need.

That is terrible. Yes folic acid comes on script ans you are ideally to take it before ttc as well as up to 15wks that when you are out of the danger zone for malformation defects like spinabifida and scoliosis.
I took folic acid and vit c tabs and irons tabs.

FerrogradC is the bomb!
I had a ferritin level of 5 at 24 weeks, it's now up to 16.
So if you're going to take any multi vitamins, I recommend that
And DEFINITELY folic acid until at least week 13.

I took Elevit first time around as my fertility specialisst recommended it. I'm taking it for the first 12 or so weeks this time (partly because I can barely ever fine the plain folic acid in the right dose) and then change to a cheaper prenancy vit such as blackmores. Not really a vitamin person (other than sleep remedies and flaxoil or evening primrose).

I find it hard to find the 800mg plan folic acid in pharmacies.

I took the 800mg folic acid for 3 months while we were TTC (on prescription from doctor), then have been taking Elevit since. I like the idea that it is providing me with any other vitamins/minerals I am missing in my diet, although I have to say it has been extremely difficult to get down some mornings! It is quite expensive too, although there are often good deals on ferrit.

I got them on prescription from my doctor. The doctors visits are free under maternity, and the prescription was cheap

I started out with Folic acid but later in my pregancy (about 25 weeks plus) I felt like my body needed more so I took Elevit at my pharamists recommendation. It was good - I only took it for the pregnancy and not afterwards, which you can do.

I don't usually take vitamins as I usually have a really good varied diet... but when I got preg, I started taking the folic acid supplement... but then I got hyperemesis and I couldn't keep any fruit or veg down, so I was taking elevit for about the first 6 months. Now I only throw up once a day (ish) and can keep everything down, so I'm just taking iron tablets on top of that.

I took just the folic with Maya, took folic + a preg vitamin with the gremlins, I started off taking Elevit on the OB's recommendation but aside from the folic it's pretty similar in composition to the cheaper brands and I was already taking folic so it wasn't worth the extra $$$. In the last few weeks of preg I also took Ferrograd coz my iron levels were a shocker,by the time you add in the antibiotics and the antiemetics I was really popping pills!
This time round have only taken the folic.
