Another BF woe
Rex has just started to clamp down really hard when feeding Any suggestions on how I can stop him doing it? I'm seriously ending up with real sore nipples!
A very lucky mummy to two gorgeous boys:

Ouch wow hes young to be doing that....I remember Lucas started doing the same thing around 4-5 months...and then he would clamp down and pull away (taking my nipple with him in his mouth)....he still does this from time to time...now with TWO bottom teeth! IT REALLY HURTS.
My suggestion would be to say 'No' and take him off the boob for 5 mins or so, put him down and then return to him and try again. Everytime he does it, keep taking him off. He will soon learn that if he is going to play rough, he won't get titty! This works with my son.
I would do the same except that he's so very little that 5 mins is IMO too long and should only need to be a few seconds. It's awful though isn't it, like 'why should I put myself in your mouth when you just did that!?' LOL Remember to put your finger inside his mouth/gums to release his pressure too.

Hey Nikki,
Not sure if you're still having this problem, but it could be that you have a little more milk than Rex needs. It's probably not that he is clamping down intentionally but more of a reflex to your supply. He would probably do it more around or just after a growth spurt when your milk supply increases suddenly. Here's a page on the LaLeche League website which talks about oversupply and clamping down -
Ouch!!! Keziah does this too, and because I'm feeding her football hold she pushes on the wall or whatever I'm leaning against and pulls me with her...it fricken hurts!!!! It's hard to get angry with something so cute tho
