How do you heat your EBM? We are feeding Tom a bottle of EBM at about 11.30. It takes ages to heat up from fridge temp to nice temp by standing in warm water. Last night I woke up half an hour before it was needed to start warming it up so he didnt scream the house down waiting for it (little bugger slept through to 1.30 and the milk was cold again)

Any tips would be gratefully appreciated.

it's a real pain the the bum cause it can't be microwaved

I don't know of any other way to heat it apart from what you're doing.

would you consider of using formula for this feed? it's much quicker to heat up (I hope this doesn't offend - just trying to think of ways for you to make the most of your time to sleep)

No, i really want to stick with breast milk while I can. I might have a look on trademe and see if I can pick up one of those bottle warmers cheap.

Its an organisational issue for me more than anything!

Yeah just use boiling water and stand the bottle in it. Doesn't take long at all to heat up. We always changed Ashleigh's nappy before she was fed (habit from NICU) and so would stick the bottle in the water, then change nappy and it was about the right temp by that time. I would imagine a bottle warmer would take around the same amount of time to heat up. And you wouldn't want it sitting around waiitng for baby to wake up as it would get a yucky skin on it!

We boiled the jug then put the bottle in a glass of boiled water, took about 10 minutes tops.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

yep we did the same, we had a plastic measuring jug that we would use that we could fill up nicely so that all of the bottle was in the hot water.

We use a stainless steel jug (from the coffee machine), I think the water stays warmer for longer, and heats up a bit faster than glass (don't quote me on this tho!)

BTW are you trying to do a dream feed? ie wake him at 10.30 to try and get him to go for longer? (That's what I do with the EBM).
And remember that you aren't supposed to heat up EBM more than once

wonder if you could heat and then keep it in a heat bag - those foil lined ones...we have one on each side of ellas baby bag (thanks J and J!!!) and it keeps them warm from about 7 30am til noon!

at 11 30pm at least it isnt middle of night stuff so heating up should be easier on the brain? its the 2 and 3 am ones that mess with your head!

We have a bottle warmer and they are really good - it can heat a large bottle of milk (230ml) from fridge to drinkable temp in about 8-10min. And you can use the warmer later on when heating solids too. I love ours - it's an Avent one.

Depending on when you express you could leave it at room temperature and then warm it up. It is ok to leave it at room temp for 6 hours, then it won't take half as long to heat up.

Thats what I am doing. We go to bed about 9.30 so I get it out of the fridge and then when he wakes us at about 11.30 we both get up. DH changes nappy and tries to please a screaming baby while I wait for the milk to warm up in a jug of hot water.....a few minutes seem like hours when he is screaming!

We are only doing a EBM feed so that DH can start to get involved and I can start to slip away. And I am having to take an antihistamine daily at the moment and this way I can take it and have 8 hours or so before Tom gets any of my breast milk.

Don't put it in the fridge. If you express at 9.30 you can just leave it at room temp till 11.30 then it will only take a couple of mins to heat

I agree with Cuppatea, if you are only expressing at 9.30pm it will be sweet on the bench till 11.30pm. The bottle will heat faster if you stick it in boiling water rather than hot water from the tap too.

At the end of every feed I used to get the gremlins next feed out of the fridge and leave it on the bench ready for their next feed. They used to scream too while their bottles heated and I considered a bottle warmer but they're not actually any quicker. I also used to boil the jug before I went to bed that way the water was semi-warm still so didn't take as long to boil when I got up, and if you use a metal bowl or saucepan to put the bottle in it seems to heat faster.

The only other thing I can say is hang in there, every stage passes and Tom will get more patient as he gets older.

Just a thought too, does it have to be the dream feed that Tom has his EBM bottle? If you did it at one of the earlier feeds you could get the bottle ready a few minutes before he's due to have it rather than having to get up and make it after he's woken? And EBM can stay in the fridge for up to 48 hours so you could still express at 9.30pm and put the milk in the fridge till you need it.
Just another random suggestion.

I totally agree, I now have time to get up and get his feed ready while he just coos to himself, he no longer screams for food the minute he wakes up. I also boil the kettle before going to bed so it is still semi warm and takes less time to boil
