Topic: Awwww Contractions... Posted: 17 September 2007 at 7:38am |
Just wanting to know what methods of relief you used to ease your contractions, we used heat, then cool, massage with Lucy.
I am freaking out about these, but they are all part of having a baby

Bath/shower didn't work for me at all. At home I was leaning into my bean bag on all fours. At hospital I was standing and MW gave me a massage, then used gas. I tried to focus all my efforts into sucking on that gas properly which was more of a distraction than anything else.

Ive never laboured at home but at hospital I used those heat patches from elastplast, you stick them on like a big band aid and they produce heat. I had it on my lower back and it meant i could keep walking through the contractions and not have to hold a hottie or weatpack, it was great. I used gas but it did nothing, just gave me something to bite on.

I was nearly fully dilated before the midwife LET us go to the hospital, so I had no pain relief and when we got to the hospital I was fully dilated so now time for any pain relief, going to go to the hospital before any of this happens again.
Thanks Andie, I feel like I am going crazy!

with your first I don't think you can just breathe thru them but with second (and more) you know what you are in for and so more controlled. That was me anyhow I found breathing thru them was so good and helpful. Midwife commented I was so 'controled' Brooke slid out (kicking) with a couple of pushes - 5 minutes pushing can't be bad! I also had pethadine with her but got it too late so didn't work till afterwards. (no use then!) with #1 Josh - long labour had pethadine and gas. would of said give me and epi (instead of yelling cut me open and get it out LOL )if i was more informed.

I really recomment reading the book a new childbirth, I can't remember who wrote it but its a really good book on telling you how to breathe and when to breathe and what to do with the rest of your body. Its old so some of the stuff is silly but the actual part on giving birth is amazing.

LOL Lu! Sorry I have no ideas Lisha I was awful, I nearly passing out with each contraction b'cos I just couldnt get a breath in with all the pain lol. They even tried to put an oxygen mask on me which I kept riping off between contractions. On the up side I didnt make one noise, all you could hear was everyone else saying blah blah and thats exactly what I heard blah blah blah lmao. I hope you are feeling better today.

I got to 9.5cms at home on the laundry toilet (glamourous huh! Lol) but apparently one of the best positions to be in (squatting).
I breathed through the contractions and found when I exhaled really deeply the pain would ease heaps. Also I focussed in on DH’s book on the floor of the bathroom and just starred at it, that was a tip from a friend of mine who has had 3 drug free labours. That worked heaps too but I never want to see that book again ever! lol
When I got to hospital I got in the bath and had gas and I was fine after that, I found that exhaling through the contractions and inhaling the gas made the pain pretty much go away for me. I did feel totally stoned after the tank and a half I went through and vomited a lot but hey, small price to pay if it works! lol
It wasn’t until much later that I had an epi and that was because they wanted to try a vontuese and if that failed (which it did) I was to have a c-section ASAP.
I’m the biggest wuss with pain but found the methods I used to be quite good.

I agree with those saying you are more "in control" second and subsequent times. I coped by focussing (like Toni) on something (a fan blowing cold air on my face) and Exhaling on the owwie part. Concentrating on the breathing and thinking of it as a "hill to climb" with the exhale on the going down the other side part really helped. As did rolling my ankles or jiggling my toes (a focus thing). I was perching on the side of the bed, very quietly, just moaning with the breathing part (which I found helped) and gripping hard on the gas mouthpeice (didn't use til repair job) I had an Epi late in the peice, M/W broke waters and baby born 15 mins later, again focuing on the breathing made the pushing easier. You willb e more in tune with your body and know what to expect with each contraction. You might have forgotten now, but it will all come back!
