Choose your LMC? How did you choose what sort of care to go for (midwife, obstetrician etc.) What questions did you ask him/her?

I'm putting together some tips for choosing an LMC and would love your thoughts!

I didn't ask mine any, I rung my friend up who was pregnant and asked her who she had and went with her, ended up having a great relationship and went on to have her the 2nd time as well and hopefully a 3rd  time as well.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Well I've twice been due between Christmas and New Years (by dates) LOL so I went for who was available!! And the second bubba just had the first bubba's mw. I asked my GP who would he recommend and she was full and recommended a couple of other names to me... and that's how I got there.

I wish I had have had the guts to have met a couple of mws before deciding. My first mw was nice but we didn't 'click' like my second mw (first one dumped me, much to my relief - on account of her having cancer).

When it was time to choose my next mw (for baby #3) I had known a few mums with different mws and got to hear some good reports of who was excellent.

My aunt reccommended a group of independant midwives she'd used, and I went there! Went back to them again for #2, had a different midwife though as the one from Kiya had retired (personal health reasons). With #3, I had to use the community ones.

FPA reccommended a MW when I preg with Mercedes and I had her with Alize too! I guess word of mouth as they have MW lists but one of the nurses had actually had this particular MW and said she was great. My SIL and a good friend of mine ended up having her as their MW too after I said how great she was.

limited in MW here (2 to choose from when pregnant with rhyley) and I didn't like one of them as my friend had her and she was so ... oh whats the word?? anyhow I didn't like her cause she hogged my friends baby when it was born for 'cuddles' and then when my friend got PND she was no where to be seen, forgot alot of after care and so i thought I didn't want her. So I went with the one I had which I have known since having Brooke (she took over from my midwife with Brooke when she was on holiday) she had a really great wit and alot of ppl who had her would have her again (as i would if I went on to have anymore)
So after a long explaination..... I picked mine cause I liked her and had heard good things about her and the other one was someone I didn't want.

My first midwife was a friend of my Mums and also looked after my brother and his g/f when they had their baby. She was excellent.
Second time round I didn't know anyone in the area so my GP recommended a midwife broker, who matches clients with a list of midwives that she represents, according to their specific requirements.
It worked out really well, my midwife was lovely and I'll definitely use her again if we go on to have a third!

I chose the LMC that had the phone number that sounded closest to my house. Turns out she is one of the best and hailed by many

My GP at the time referred me to the hospital midwives that run through National Womens. She was OK, but something just didn't click - almost as if she didn't take some of my concerns 100% seriously. We had to shift districts over halfway through my pregnancy though, and I was SO lucky to find another midwife who could deliver for me ! I asked on here I think, and went with a lady called Jill Allen as recommended by toniellis. She's an independent midwife who operates from a collective based in Albany. She was awesome, very genuine, but didn't put up with any BS or give any out and that was very appreciated. Am really really hoping for her again when we have #2.

Mine was the first available after ringing about 10, as Lucy was due at xmas.

When I met her we just clicked, being a younger midwife helped

I am having her again for this pregnancy.

Wow, I've never heard of a midwife broker, that sounds interesting.

My first was a Palmerston North hospital one I knew someone who had her and she was ok never really clicked.  Then we moved at the last min so I went on the net looking for one in New Plymouth I got 2 name's form the yellow pages rang the bottom one and she took me on.  We got on so well she even came to our wedding and convinced me to have a home birth for my second was the best thing I ever did.  I guess it is not so much question's that I asked, but how comfortable I felt around them.

I made my sister ring heaps for me and I got the only one who was available (I was 13 weeks) luckily she was great and I had her second time round as well.

That midwife broker sounds like such a good idea, when I was having a hard time finding a midwife I thought it would be great if there was a number to ring and they could tell you who was still available rather than having to ring them all.

There didn't seem to be any near where I live, so I surreptitiously asked two pregnant friends what they were doing.

One had a GP obstetrician (rare find!) but on the north shore so no good for me, and the other had a midwife with her first but had dramas because her baby was due between Xmas & NYs and late. She's a nurse so this time decided to go with the Greenlane Collective of midwives and obstetricians. Because she's a nurse this gave me faith to do the same. When I talked to my GP she thought it was a good decision and that I would get great care.

I haven't met my midwife yet, but I've talked to her on the phone and she sounds lovely. I was stoked that I still got a midwife allocated rather than getting a different one everytime.

The first one I really wanted (My friends MW) was already booked up so I just called the first group of MWs that was local to me and clicked straight away with both my MWs.

The thing I looked for first was personality and could I trust this person with my child's life. I was told by quite a few people that I had left it really late to find one! I was 10 weeks (found out I was PG at 6 weeks) and didn't think there would be such a shortage!

Picked mine on the advice of partners SIL and cos of time im due got on to her really early prolly at about 6 weeks. Got my mum ringing around in my home town for one as well incase we head back there as well and will take whoever is available unless i have heard something bad about them as ive had some advice from my friends and mum asking people she knows for what they found with different ones.

Yeah advice of others has been my biggest influence. With the lady im with in CHCH i didnt ask her any questions really just trusted what partners SIL told me about her and my first instinct when meeting her was that i like her and trust her so im happy with my choice
