A friend bought one off trade me and found it great for peace of mind. yOu have to remember that you won't hear it till your MW has heard the hb, and even then it can be a couple of weeks later before you can pick it up - bubs can be moving around so you can't find it, you can have trouble getting low enough, they aren't as strong as the MW's one. But it was loads of fun when we had a preggy lady party and all of us listened to the hbs!
I thought about it in the early stages. In the end I decided not to because I knew logically that there would be times when I couldn't pick up the heartbeat, and I knew that would stress me out big time.
I had one and I have to say I would not have survived the anxiety of my pregnancy without it. Even tho it did stress me out worrying whether the heartbeats were too fast/too slow and whether I was hearing two heartbeats or just following the same baby around, but just hearing them was so reassuring. When I had bleeding at 25 weeks and had to wait until a reasonable hour of the morning (it was 4am) to ring my m/w it was so good to be able to hear the babies heartbeats and know they were ok. And Maya loved listening to "her" babies too.
My advice is to get a decent quality one tho. A lot of the ones on TM aren't actually dopplers they just magnify the sound of bubs heartbeat so you can only use them late second/third trimester. I hired a medical grade one from www.b2k.co.nz and it was brilliant.
