Hey All,
Just wanting to know if there are any classes which teach you things you need to know when bubs arrives - our antenatal classes taught us nothing
Am looking for classes in Auckland
Would appreciate anything anyone knows

I just went to a class called 'Practical Parenting' which was held by The Parents Centre. I think they have offices based all over the place.
The class covered feeding, wind, nappies, sterilising bottles, bathing, clothes, etc.
Quite helpful.

I'm booked in to do one at the Parents Centre called Baby & You, although you attend this shortly after the babys birth. It says it will cover infant feeding, plunket, CPR & first aid, awareness of relationship changes, physical developmental stages of your child (incl. infant massage), a creative session focusing on sensory development, play & age appropriate toys.
I'm not sure if this is really what you're after but you could give the Parents Centre a call and tell them what you are looking for and see if they have a course covering that. Have you asked your midwife for any suggestions? She might know of a few places. I am absolutely clueless about baby's so I'm hoping that they cover some of the basics in our Ante-natal class.

Thanks, Yeah I will try and contact the parent centre - was hoping there was something I can do before bubs arrives.
I am also clueless and we were taught absolutley nothing in our antenatal classes which was a bummer

that sucks ellasmum.. we didn't find ours very insightful either.. we knew everything that they mentioned. We thought that we would actually be taught something new.. not so..
we are looking to do one of these courses too - please let me know how you get on

I've just done this one too, and it was great. It was only a two-hour session, and I would have been happy if it had gone on for two weeks, but even so we learned a lot about how to care for a newborn.

I second (or third!) the parents centre one too. We had it 2 weeks ago and found it amazing. We got some paperwork on all the tips they gave us too, if I remember (baby brain!) I'll photocopy them and bring them Friday.

Do you know if all the Parents Centre's run this course? I wasn't told about it at all from the lady at the Parents Centre I talked to and it sounds really good.

Amber, as far as I know it's usually part of their full antenatal classes, I'm not sure if they offer it separately. It'd definitely be worth ringing them and asking if you can get into one of the practical parenting classes though.
Drives me nuts that it's so hard to find courses that teach you what to do with the baby when you get it home. There must be a real market for a kind of parenting school, where you learn about feeding/bathing/sleeping/infant first aid/everything else you need to know.

Duh, as soon as you said that it's part of the full antenatal class Mikaela, I clicked and remembered them mentioning one separate Saturday class as part of it. Of course, when I looked it up it "Practical Parenting"  So yay, I'm already enrolled in it

Hmmm speaking of Parents Center - guess I better pay for mine soon or I'll be un-enrolled....
I don't get a choice about the baby and you class - for Takapuna parent's centre you have to do both courses The baby and you class will run in March so I'll have a 3 month old by then so hopefully it will still be useful.

My Baby & You course starts 2 weeks after my due date so I'm a little worried that we won't be settled enough to start going out to courses. Especially if baby is late.
I'm not sure if we had a choice about doing it or not. The amount the lady told me included the course but on the form you enrol on, they were separate options.

I'm doing the Takapuna one, and they never said it was compulsary to do both. I am by choice, but plenty of girls in my antenatal class haven't enrolled in Baby & You yet. They're mostly planning to though.
ETA: In fact, I've just remembered that they said at our first antenatal class that it's NOT compulsary to do both, just recommended.
