Topic: Large Baby Question Posted: 12 July 2007 at 8:47pm |
At our 20 week scan they indicated that our baby was above average in size, close to the 95th percentile and I was to come back in one months time for a re-scan.
We had the re-scan done today, and everything was perfect with the baby, growing well and its organs are all nice and healthy. They measured everything again and the measurements are still indicating a larger than average baby, its sitting just under the 95th percentile again, so consistent with the previous measurements growth wise which is good, but big!
I am being tested for GD at 28 weeks, although I am more convinced that it is genetic reasoning for a big bubs! My DH was 10lb 4oz and is a strapping tall man and I am not petite by anymeans.
My question is, has anyone else had this indicated to you at your scan and what did they do as you got closer to your due date?? Do they induce you so you don't get too big etc?? Was your bubs actually ginormous (sp?) (I can't help thinking of a huge 12pd baby or something like that for a first baby)!!! They have indicated maybe a change in due date by 10 days forward, then it would fall into the average size for EDD, although my m/w is not so keen on changing the EDD.
Any help appreciated TIA!

Peachy, I had a scan at 38 weeks which indicated bubs was already 8lbs and by now (full term) probably closer to 9lbs already. MW told me scans aren't totally reliable but that EDD is best calculated the earlier the scan. I was hoping that they would move my EDD forward, but since my EDD was formulated from a scan they did when I was 10 weeks, she said that would be the most accurate date.
I asked MW again about size (as I'm a small person) and she said you can quite comfortably have a large baby as long as the head circumference is within normal limits and able to pass through your pelvis. So could be just that your baby is long or chubby and that you won't have problems at all. My MW told me of a girl who had a 10lb 13oz baby quite comfortably with no medical intervention, so it can be done!

I wouldn't trust what you and your DH are as I was 10lb born and DH was 11lb 4 born and Andrew was 8lb 4 and Josh was 9lb 4 both a week early (thou the dr did think I may of have developed GD towards the end of the pregnancy) due to pre eclampsia. My friend pushed out an 11lb 13 baby a week before me and she is a little person. It has a lot to do with the babies head circumfrence (both my boys had little heads when born) as to how easy it is to push out and if the baby actually is ready and head is at the right angle.

With #1 my scans were always indicating a big bubba, then at 40wks I had a scan saying she would be 11lbs..thankfully 4days later she arrived and was only 10lbs. Hopefully a bit further on you will have a better idea on the size you will be expecting. BTW When Pg with Alize they keep telling me he would be about 9lbs including at my late scan at 35wks. He ended up being 7lb4oz

my last 3 scans showed james was above average size at last scan (38wks) he was measured off scale.
I did have a large baby 11lb 5oz (no help), he was way easier to birth than haleigh who was 9lb 13oz (forceps).
with haleigh though my scan est she wouldnt be any bigger than 8lb and they got it wrong.
the specialists refused a csection (i was terrified to give birth so asked lol) and also told me no induction till i was 10days over, thankfully i only went 5days over after mw gave me stretch n sweep at 2days over.
they wont be keen on changing edd at such a late stage in most cases, i know my mw wasnt, but my dates continually changed with each scan.
i dont think the birth weight of the parents have much to do with babies weight, df and i were both average sized babies and we had to giganta babies, but i have an aunty who had huge babies (bigger than james).

Just wanted to say - my DH was 11 lb 10 and his mum pushed him out just fine. Although I do hope that his birth weight doesn't influence our little one!

Thanks for your replies ladies! Funnily enough I am actually not that concerned about the birth of a large baby. My MIL had 4 kids and told me DH was by far her easist birth (and was her biggest bubs by far) a couple of pushes and he was out and she totally believes it was because of his big size, she has said her smaller ones were the ones that were the hardest! She went back and had another after him so couldn't have been that bad
I was just more interested to know what the m/w or obstetrician did regarding inducing etc! The m/w has indicated I need to get an obstetrician just in case of emergency c section???
I am fairly broad in body myself, ain't no petite sized spring chicken here, so I don't think I will have any problems with the size of the baby and the size of my pelvis!

Both DF and I were under 7lbs. Should be interesting for bubs.

I had an OB checking me but that wasn't because they were concerned with the size it was because of the pre eclampsia. But my MW's B/U told me that they were glad the OB did let me be induced as if we had of left Josh in there an extra 2 weeks (like another OB wanted to ) he would of been huge and probably would of ended up as a c section (my biggest fear) as he might of been rather big.

Thats funny mummy-becks I have a c section fear aswell, I would much prefer to give birth naturally to a big baby than have a c section! I think its because I have just seen (not literally) my SIL go through an elective c section and it scared the c**p out of me, yet her first baby was a natural birth and that didn't scare me at all! Also the fact that her tiny baby (6lb 9oz and she was taken early) has had so many respitory probems since birth and has been in hospital all week again and she's only 3 weeks old

The only thing that would worry me with a big baby is how big the head is..

I was told all the way through my pregnancy to expect a big baby - 9 or 10lbs. I'm a fairly smallish person, so was pretty terrified of that! As it was though, Joshua was 8lb 1oz when born so pretty much average in weight, but 56cm long, so in the 95th percentile for length. Don't freak out, all will be as it should

I had a growth scan at 36 weeks which estimated Maya at 7lb9oz and posterior, and I freaked out big time. My midwife wasn't too worried, altho she did repeat the GD screening just in case. I went into spontaneous labour at 38 weeks and Maya was born weighing 9lb1oz. When I was first pregnant with the gremlins I told her I wanted an induction at 38 weeks as I was worried about bubs size given Maya was big and early, but she said to wait and see what happened. In the end there were two of them so they were smaller, but to be honest I don't think it was any easier having my 6lb8ozer than it was having Maya.

both my scans for my boys showed HUGE babies!! with Bay they said at 37 weeks that he was going to be 12lbish! but he was born a week later at 7lb 14oz then this time they indicated another huge bubs and he was born 2 weeks early at 7lb 10oz ( i was induced due to size and risk it was having on his liver).
