Hey everyone - just wondering when you all put you're little one into a big bed?
Fabian is quite a long boy and he wriggles alot in his sleep, which I think is waking him up - we have bought a big bed for him, quite low to the ground and a detachable side rail as well, I'm petrified he'll find a way to fall out, but in saying that, when he has slept in our bed with us, he has woken up and knows how to reverse off the big bed to the floor safely!

Sounds all good, especially if he can get down without falling down, if you get my drift. Personally, I think before 18 months is a bit wee, and before one is just, well... Well, I just don't agree, although I know lots of people do it. Thats the beauty of opinions, though, isn't it!!

Hannah transitioned at 17mos and Briona at 15mos. Bria was far more ready than Hannah because she had been watching Hannah in a big bed (little sister syndrome ). With Hannah, I made the mistake of also changing her bedroom at the same time and she didn't like that.  We never had falling out issues, a bed is quite big for a 1yo to fall out of, but I had a whole lot of pillows on the floor just in case.
I also found the best way to make the change was to let them play on the bed when it is set up/during the day, to get comfortable with it (read a story etc). Then put them in for the first time (for sleep) one night. That way if they are going to freak out it won't last long because when it's dark they forget that it's different anyway LOL

Andrew moved at I think 18 months. He had been sleeping on a stretcher at daycare was was fine with the rolling out of bed. We transitioned him by taking the bars off the side of the cot for a few weeks then getting him to move. He was very excited about moving into the bed.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

We have just had our 4 night of Anastasia in a big bed & also being moved into Ashlyns room, both girls have nasty coughs at the moment so are both waking thru the night but not waking each other. Ashlyn was in a big bed at about 16mths as Anastasia was almost due but they have both taken to beds without a problem.
We did have one falling out of bed night but that was because of a pair of satin type jammies - Ashlyn just slid out of bed!!!

It's interesting reading all of these replies as I assumed (with my little knowledge of babies/toddlers etc) that big beds were for 2 years +
Guess I should stop reading the abby books and move on to the toddler ones, perhaps I'm in denial!?!? LOL
We've got one of those cots that turns into a bed and we're not thinking of occupying the cot feature again before she needs a bed so she'll just stay in her cot/bed.
I'm a bit worried that because she moves around so much in her sleep that she'll just keep falling out

we moved jack into a big bed the night of his 2nd birthday. charli was due 2mths later so we wanted him sorted before she came along. he fell out a couple of times but i made sure we got him a bed low to the ground for that reason.
he made the move really easily and didn't fuss at all

I think this is interesting,
We have had Tyrell in bed with us as he has been sick and it is the only way anyone will get any sleep. My gosh does he move, I think if I put him in a "bed" he will just find a way to fall out! LOL

Funny  Fabian kicks all the duvet covers off and lies across the top of the bed when he's with us - hence the panic of rolling out of bed - but I suppose if I don't make the move to see how he'll be, I'll never know and he'll be in his cot till he's 21! (years that is!) I'll give it a whirl in the next month or so - then after that potty training ! Oh joy !

I think most toddlers are moved out for the new arrival LOL. Briona's friend (22 mos) is still in a cot, her mum likes that she can't get out of bed without 'permission' I actually prefer to train them while they are young and can't open the door (so if they get out of their bed/bedroom, I just put them back and shut the door).
I moved Briona so young because she was climbing the bars - no kidding, she was getting up some good leverage - and I freaked out that she would be tipping out before long

Yeah busymum we had Ashlyn doing the same, didn't want to be in bed one night & was just letting her try & settle herself then the cry that came out of the room wasnt one of frustration but terror so I raced in there to find her laying across the top of the cot, one leg in & one leg out I nearly died so that was the end of the cot for her
