Topic: pee on a stick Posted: 01 July 2007 at 8:54pm |
ok you know how you pee on a stick when you visit your midwife to check for protein and sugar.
mine so far have been negative but what would cause them to be positive?

I had things pop up randomly but never consistently so not sure why - can't remember what those were either. My MW was never worried. I think the pee on the stick is only part of the picture and they'll do more tests if worried.

usually your body would not be letting go of these sorts of things unless there was a serious abundance of them or your kindeys were having trouble processing and filtering your blood.. peeing on the stick would show the midwife some sort of idea as to you sugar levels, protein etc and kidney function, the sticks usually check for leucocytes etc as well which can be signs of infection. with pre-eclampsia/toxaemia, one of the first sings can be increased protein in the urine.. along with all the other stuff like high bp, swelling, headaches etc.
so that's bascially it. he he, but isn't it fun seeing it turn all those neat colours.

My midwife said that the discharge that comes out while you're pregnant has protein in it so if a tiny bit of that goes on the pee stick, it can show up as a trace.

My Midwife told me the sugar it a sign of pregnancy caused diabeties so they check for that so they can monitor and intervine if they need and the protein is a sign of UTI's another common pregnancy thing.
i learnt all this on friday

When I had my tummy bug, my MW got me to pee on the stick and practically every one of the little squares changed colour! It was due to me being so dehydrated and having a UTI...
protein can be sign of pre-eclampsia, but then you have further bloods to check your liver function
sugar can be sign of diabetes, again you would have bloods to double check
ketones are a sign of dehydration and that the kidneys aren't working to optimum
blood can just be spotting - I had blood in my urine but can't remember why now
I think they're the main ones

Isn't it tricky trying to pee on the stick, especially since you can't really see down there now!
