I have a curly one... for those of you TTC and wanting to keep it quiet, what's your excuse during the TWW for not drinking alcohol?
I'm not TTC yet, but there is a small risk that I might be pg at the mo (thanks to AirNZ for telling me my carryon was too big, stowing it and then losing it, along with the contraceptive pills inside!). I have a background in reproductive physiology, so I know the risk is small, but its there nevertheless, and as a result, I don't want to drink for the next week or so until I know I'm not preggers.
The problem is that I've just started a new job, and I'm expected to go to the monthly drinks tomorrow night. Being the new staff member, I'll not only be expected to shout everyone (which is fine) but I'm also expecting to be plied with a fair few drinks myself. How do I turn them down without raising any suspicions? I expect the only other non-drinker will be the only other young woman there - and she's already pregnant. I've been married long enough that if i come in looking tired or feeling off, I'm hassled are you pg? they are just kidding of course, but i'm going to need a good reason not to drink. Not going isn't an option this time, and I've tossed up whether to say that i'm detoxing, but I don't think that would wash with this lot. They are good people, but I really don't want them suspecting I might be pg or TTC at this stage of my new job when I've no intention of being TTC for at least another 18 months.

Have a big day tomorrow?

And if you do get the dreaded question, just say "no, no, it's not that", cause if you say you're not sure then you'll get questions for months!

Antibiotics is a good one... only problem with that is that a lot of them are vets and will ask which one, what for etc. But I'm not a vet so maybe I could get away with saying its a big word that I don't remember. What sort of things do you need antibiotics for? I have a bit of a scratchy throat - do they give antibiotics for that?
And thanks busymum too, if asked, I'll deny it. Its a bit sad I think, that I have to act like kids are the last thing I want right now, just so that I'm likely to be targetted for promotion at work. I love that I've found Ohbaby's lovely people who I can ask these questions of without getting the "oh, so you're getting clucky" response. I'll definitely be on here more often when the time comes!

Bee, de-toxing is one of those current health theories where if you basically eat fruit and veges and drink water and herbal teas only and have no coffee, alcohol, meat, processed food etc for a certain time then supposedly it is good for you. I don't know if it thats true or not, but it would certainly be out of character for me to do something like that (and even more so to discuss it with the guys at work!).

I'd either say a you're detoxing or even just a simple you don't feel like a drink.

Erm ... you could say that you have bad period cramps, and you can't drink with the pain meds you're taking That ought to shut them up ...it just depends if you can bring yourself to say it

Otherwise, you could say that you have taken pain medication (migraine meds or something), and you're not going to drink on them.

OR that you have stomach problems and can't tolerate alcohol. I ended up in hospital a couple of years ago with terrible chest pains ...and basically, I couldn't drink alcohol for about 2 years after that. I can still barely drink much. Something to do with my stomach.

Thanks ladies. The night out was fine. I made sure I always had a lemon lime & bitters in my hand, so only a few people felt the need to offer me drinks. I also showed up a wee bit late, so that the bulk of the party was tipsy enough not to notice that I was holding a non-alcolic drink. Only one guy pushed the issue, and I said that I was tired and I've learnt from experience that even a tiny bit of alcohol just puts me to sleep when I'm tired... at which point a mate decided to repeat (again!) the story about the time I drove home really tired and hit the house with the car (it was just a tiny scratch, really)... and the topic was successfully changed!
