Topic: Kids names? Posted: 31 January 2012 at 9:36am |
Anyone care to share how you chose your kids names? I love those kind of stories.
In saying that, mine are completely boring, no story or anything, they were just names we liked. I've liked the name Jacob since I was a teenager (a character in a series of books I liked was called Jake, which wasn't the reason I liked it especially, but probably didn't hurt... and no, not Twilight, they weren't invented when I was a teenager ). Emily was top of DH's list, even though I suggested it I had another name I liked better. But I've liked that one since my teenage years too. Again, influenced by reading, I think, I first ran across it in the 'Emily of New Moon' series, which are a favourite.

Their middle names are a bit more interesting, actually - Nathaniel means 'a gift from God' and Joy is fairly self-explanatory (because she was such a completely wonderul surprise, after all that trying with Jacob, joy's the only word for it )

Awww
Oliver was a name I liked and DH agreed to readily. His middle names come from his Grandad ( John) and his great-Grandad ( McLaughlin).
Lilia is a blend of my Mum's name (Riria) and 'Lily' a name I love. Her middle names come from her great nana & great-great nana( Eva) and MIL & my BFF ( Anne).
Caleb is a name DH agreed to after I told him he couldn't watch the movie he wanted to watch until we'd decided on a name! His middle names come from DH's middle name ( Ian) and a family name from my side ( Maxwell).
And the little miss (if indeed she is a she - Henna79's surprise has me doubting!), Siara is a name we eventually agreed on (from Ciara, but we changed the spelling so people would say it 'see-AH-ra' rather than the traditional 'key-AH-ra'). Her middle names come from one of my oldest friends ( Callie) and my middle name ( Rose).

Alia is names from the movie "Dune" DH loved that name a long time before I came along, character suits her to! Her middle name is the same as my middle name.
Cooper was the result of a text sent by DH "How about Cooper" when he was in Oz, I struggled to work out a name & so left it up to him, so thought that he wanted it, turns out that he was just throwing it in the hat but too late it was stuck, I have the sneaking suspicion that it's after Cooper's Beer. His middle name is DH's middle name.
This one....ekkkkkk

Hendrix was named after my grandad (Hendrikus) middle name Terrence after my partners great grandfather and his grandfathers middle name. We are thinking Frankie for this wee girl (Frances is DP's grandads middle name and Francescis my grandads and 2 of my uncles middle names) Maria as a middle name (my nana, mum and aunties middle name). But still not 100% sure. Love the family connections :)

Not very exciting here, mostly just looking in name books.
Kayla was the first name on a list of five girls names that we had put on a maybe list (just from looking through a name book), and was my favourite of them even though DH didnt seem too keen on it. I suspect he just went with it knowing how much I liked it after I had such a traumatic birth but it suits her perfectly now
Jade (her middle name) was one of two options we had but the less common of the two. Was a name DH had come across in the book that flowed well with Kayla.
Brenna, I noticed I was more drawn to Scottish/Irish/Gaelic names so looked in the back at a list under those backgrounds. Brenna stuck out as different but not too odd. Also similar to Brianna which I liked but DH didnt. DH wasnt 100% on the name before her birth but since he had chosen our 'boy name', I got to my way with the 'girl name'. He was very certain she was a 'Brenna' post birth though. Her middle name is yet to be decided

We only want to give our children passed down middle names, so Seth has DH's middle name as his.
Seth sadly came about while DH and I were watching the O and there's a character named Seth. I was just like 'what about Seth for a name' and it just sounded good to both of us!
Sad but true...

Lily was a name that we both liked off a list of 5 names we picked each. For her middle name she has my family middle name which I have, so does Mum, Nana, Great Nana, Great great Nana and it was Great great great Nanas first name.
Nothing too exciting there

I can't remember Why we called named DS Ryan, I reallly wanted a boy and we we had the scan we could finally chose a name and DH just suggested one day. His middle name is WIlliam, which is really a family name now, as my dad, my brother and DH all have that middle name, so it was only appropriate.
Evelyn was off the movie Pearl Harbour. It is one of my favourite movies and ever since I saw it the first time I decided I wanted Evelyn. Took Dh ages to come around to it, but now she is his Evvie. Which is Ev-ee not Eve-ee Yeah. Her middle name is Sage, cause my favourite colour is green. LOL and Jade wouldn't fit right for me.
The 3rd addition has a first name and we are still throwing middle names about. We know the gender, but its a secret and only Dh and I know.
At first I wanted somethign with a Y in it because thats what the other two have lol but it doesn't.

For DS we were having trouble deciding, and hen my DH said "I'd really like to call a boy after my grandfather, because he was a good old stick - his name was Roy" I said " Really, my Granddad was called Roy too!" So although I would never have considered it otherwise, that's what he ended up. His middle name Timothy is after my brother who died when he was 21.
For DD I really liked the name Meg, and we called her Margaret as that is a family name. I told DH he could/had to choose a middle name, but he hadn't, so on the way to hospital I suggested we use both her grandmothers' names, so she is Margaret Ruth Joan. How quaint and oldfashioned!

Megan was the only girls name that really stood out for me couldnt even think of any other names that I liked ironically enough when I was pregnant her I didnt even know she was a girl and could not come up with a boys name so told DH to come up with a boys name.
He did suggest Logan but then it meant if we had a boy first (I was set on the name Megan) they would sound too alike. so he came up with the name Lucas.
Megan's middle name is Grace after my nana and Lucas' middle name is Johannes his Opa's first name.

We named both our kids by searching online name sites and baby name books.
I would read tonnes of names out loud in the evcenings and we both instantly loved the names Isla. She is Isla Mae, and DS is Aiden Reid. If #3 is a girl she will have my Nana's name as her middle name- we would both like to use it as a first name but it has the same ending sound as our last name so sounds weird.

Hannah is a name both DH and I have liked for a long time (seems every Hannah we've ever known has been nice).
As it turned out, I have Hannahs in my family tree.
Her middle name, May, comes from DH's late grandmother.
Mason is named after my late grandmother. Her maiden name was Mason. His middle name is DH's first name. All the boys in DH's family are given their middle names according to what their father's first name is.

Rico is pretty much made up on DH's behalf. He thought if it from the place Puerto Rico. He says to me when we were just going out "what about Rico, like Puerto Rico, for a boy's name". I loved it instantly!!! However then Rico Gear came on the scene once he was born, and people thought he named him that after Rico Gear. And others thought it was because DH's name is Riki, so it's a round about name like him. Na ah. Middle names Mikaere as DH's first name is Michael, but I don't particularly like that name so went for the Maori version, and Kiriwai is Dh's other middle name, a family name on his dad's side. So DH's name is Michael Riki Kiriwai, and our son's name is Rico Mikaere Kiriwai.
Gia, again Dh came up with (he never likes my suggestions!! But I mostly like his ones). It cames from a old Italian movie we were watching when I was early pregnant with Rico. It is about the 2nd WW and the American Soliders were based in Italy. An Italian women slept with 3 of the soliders and fell pg. Once the soliders went back to America, she contacted them all saying she was pregnant with their child. The soliders didn't know each other, and never knew there we other possible fathers, so supported this child whilst still living Amercia. But then there was a reunion when the child (a girl named Gia) was a teenager, and they all went back to Italy and all wanted to meet this child of theirs, so the mother had to try and organise it so none of the other possible fathers turned up at the same time! It was a great movie. And afterwards Dh said "when we have a girl, we'll call her Gia". Her middle name is Nadia which is my middle name.
Jett - another of Dh's choices. I loved Luca and was persisting with it, but DH said he'd never have that name, but came up with Jett and I liked it instantly. Middle name is Te Akau which I choose out of a list of Maori names Dh put to me, that was my favourite sounding one, but discovered just last year that Te Akau is place in our hometown!!! Also has Ryan after my brother.
Ava, Dh actually suggested Eva initially when early pregnant with Jett, but I said "no, I love Ava" which is a name I've never actually contemplated until Dh suggested Eva. Since Jett was boy, therefore didn't use Ava, when pg with Ava, there was no discussion, just went ahead with using Ava, although I tossed and turned over perhaps using Eva as it wasn't as common. I liked the idea though that I could use "Avy" as a nickname which I think is cute. Because Jett can't speak well, he actually calls Ava "Eva" anyway! Middle name is Tiare as Dh wanted her to have a Maori middle name and I didn't like any of his suggestions. MIL actually said just a few days before Ava was born about the name Tiare, and it's Maori for the gardenia flower which is so pretty. So said to Dh I like that name the most and so he agreed.

From the day we found out I was preg, we were convinced we were having a boy,and came up with the name Conor Joseph. Conor simply because it is a good irish name (DH is from Dublin) and it was the only name we both liked. Joseph is both DH's and his Dad's middle name. THEN we had the anatomy scan and hey presto, turns out we were having a girl! Hunted high and low for a girls name, couldn't agree on one, then I came across the name Isla and joked about how it is an anogram of my name (Lisa) and DH goes 'yep, thats it. We are calling her Isla'. Her middle name is Grace because it just sounds nice. My 8yo neice actually suggested it cause it is her BFF's name I'm not overly sentimental when it comes to family names, I only agreed on Joseph for a boys name to shut DH up about it. If he had his way, if we ever have a boy it would have exactly the same name as him (Patrick Joseph) but I said nu-uh! It gets your middle and last name so I at least get to choose the first name!
For any future girls, I just want something that kinda 'matches' Isla's name. I love Elsie & Scarlett.. Middle name will be Marie/Maree as it sounds like my maiden name (Murray), it's my eldest sisters middle name, my 2nd eldest sister's name is Maria, and my BFF's name is Anne-Marie, oh and DH's nana who just passed away aged 93 was called Mary.
