 Topic: baby reaching out with one hand

so my 9 week old has started reaching out for things.
i put him under his playgym and he will reach out for the rattles but only with his left hand.
he doesnt reach at all with his right hand.
he only ever stares at his left hand aswell
is this normal??
was getting abit wrried as his right hand is still in a fist alot of the time and hes not using it.

we had a simliar thing with our daughter, she had a torticollis (sp!) which meant one muscle in her neck was tighter than the other side, causing her to have trouble reaching with one side, and using one side of her body. Although we went through a year of paediatrition & physio appts etc, she eventually grew out of it and is now a fully-functioning crazy little toddler!
It would pay to get it checked out, you plunket nurse can refer you to a paed if you are worried. Hopefully its just nothing :-)

oooo thats interesting cause he always looks to the left. i mean he does look to the right but spends alot of time with his head turned to the left.
i mentioned it to the midwife before we were discharged but she just said it might of been the way he was laying in the womb.
yea i will def mention it thanks. def helpful

If you haven't already, I suggest visiting an osteo and letting them have a play around with him

Definitely check out an osteopath :) My wee DD didnt have the same problem as you are - but she was well overcooked and delivered via emergency c/s so we took her for a few sessions and it did wonders.. Ask for recommendations in your area

ok thanks i will look into it.
yea my DS was 15days over and i had to have an emergency c-section aswell as i failed to progress past 6cm after 22hours of labour

Lily did and eventually she used the other hand. This it was around 3-4 months!
