Do you think babies are more settled if Mum hasn't had pain relief during labour?

Don't think it makes a difference. My first born I had an epidural and my second just gas and then nothing. Both babies were very settled and slept and ate well

Hi ya, I'm not too sure on that one, I have only had the one baby and she came very quickly, there was no time for pain relief and the gas and air didn't work so it was all natural and she is as good as gold.

I was the same - epidural for the first (DD) and nothing for the second (DS). DD was a much more chilled baby and has always slept/eaten well, DS eats well but needs more encouragement to sleep. I think a settled baby has to do with baby's temperament, mum's temperament, environment, health and a lot more I'm sure.

Who knows but babies do pick up on mothers stress levels so if you are stressed over things they pick up on that- and things after birth can be stressful- esp if you have breastfeeding probs or complications. I had epidurals with both- 1st was emergency C section, 2nd was a 48 hour labour ending with a ventouse yet baby number 2 was more settled because I knew what I was doing 2nd time round with her.

I had an epidural and gas and DD is the most settled, plasid baby imo... No issues, barely cries... I think it comes down to how well their needs are met.

I don't think your question is worded very well

Prehaps you should be asking people if they think pain relief had an effect on baby ?

I know some pain relief drugs can make baby sleepy and can make estalishing breastfeeding difficult.

Wether or not a baby is settled relies more I would think on babys temperemant and as High9 said, how well their needs are met

I'm not sure either. I didn't have drugs with either of mine and they both have completely different temperaments. DD wasn't a very settled baby at all, whereas DS is a placid, chilled out wee thing.
DD 4yrs
DS 2yrs

It is quite a complex question really. Many studies have however shown that drugs can affect the baby negatively.

I had pethidine, gas, and epidural and a complicated labour (ending in ventouse and a heamotomah (sp) the size of my fist) with DS and he has been quite a high needs baby. He screamed non-stop after the birth for at least 6hours, whether that was due to the drugs, the labour, the birth or his personality, or a combination of all, we will never know.

All mine were born without pain relief and all mine had different temperments

DD1 slept the whole first night AND the second
DS just wanted to feed the whole night (typical male)
DD2 would not settle at all (and made me grateful for my decision to have no more kids)

I also agree, it is very badly worded question really LOL- far too simplistic.

#1 DS Home birth, no drugs- the kind of baby you wish you could get a refund on! So unsettled & hard work but also a few health issues popped up.
#2 DD Home birth, no drugs- chilled out baby, content, happy and reasonably settled.
#3 DD2 Induction, Gas, epidural, stressful labour- Not settled but not as bad as #1. Happy, alert little person but definite 4th trimester baby.

No drugs, and ds is as cool as a cucumber. I'm pleased I didn't have any as a long 2nd stage and jaundice made him very sleepy and breastfeeding was difficult enough without him also being sleepy or less alert from labour drugs as well.
