Topic: poo issues Posted: 02 November 2011 at 10:18pm |
DD is 20 months and has had poo trouble for the past maybe 6 months. Been to the doctor several times and just been told to keep giving lactulose, twice a day.
At first it was fine and was making a difference but DD is obviously hating having to take it all the time now and absolutely refuses it. Have tried using syringe, spoon, cup, putting it in her water/milk but she just will not have it. Even if I hold her down and try and hold her mouth shut (gently of course) until she swallows it, she just holds it in her mouth then spits it out.
Took her back to Doc today and she's given me some stuff that is in powder form (can't remember the name of it but it starts with M) and I mix it in with her water.... but it has a lemon/lime taste to it and she HATES it. She needs to have one sachet a day but she probably had all of about 3 small sips today then tried to tip it out and screwed up her face.
I really don't know what else I can do. She hasn't done a decent poo in weeks. She had been doing really well and pooing on the potty every two days but now she holds on to them cause they hurt so much when they do come out now she is so constipated with not having the lactulose so just does wee skids in her nappy.
I feel dreadful for her, she has been miserable so her tummy must be hurting but the Doc just doesn't seem to worried.
Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Maxalon???
Have you tried to limit her wheat intake? That could be blocking her up?
Is she still on formula? Formula with all her food could be blocking her up as well?
Have you tried kiwifruit?

Yea Maxalon, that's the one. I just couldn't be bothered getting up off my bum to check the name of it haha but yea, that's it.
She has toddler formula for drinking but normal milk in her foods etc.
She eats loads of kiwifruit, she can't get enough of the stuff. It's about the only thing I can get into her during the day. She's gone off her food. She will eat a full meal at dinner time tho but wont eat sandwiches, yoghurt, any of her normal lunchtime things, other than fruit.

Sorry I havnt been in your position, but our wee boy always struggles with poo if he's had banana or cheese for a few days in a row. At one stage about 6 months ago I boiled a heap of prunes and put the juice into his water bottle which seemed to help. Thinking about it now it could even go into home made iceblocks? Hope things improve, poor wee poppit!!

My bubs loves prunes, maybe see if she will try those. Just wondering if you should go and see somebody else if you are concerned about it.

when back at the doctors next ask for a blood test for cealic disease, maybe it could be gluten thats blocking her up.My son was diagnosed this year after a blood test and further testing. he's a new child after removing gluten. good luck or try a naturopath.

Prune juice and prunes are good. Kiwi crush, kiwi fruit...Lots of fruit in general but steer clear of bananas.
lactulose can make your tummy really hurt!

Is the stuff called Movicol by any chance? If it is you can also mix it with other things such as juice (you may not be so keen on this tho). I second prunes and kiwi crush. Bananas block my wee one up a bit too. Really hope you get things sorted!

oh also what is her water intake like? The more the better as it helps to keep the bowel moist and therefore bowel movements also.

Yea bazz44 - it's actually Movicol, not Maxalon like I said earlier!
Her water intake is excellent, she LOVES water and drinks a lot of it.
Might have to get some prunes and see if she likes them cause she likes all other fruit etc so that's a good idea. And maybe the kiwi crush as well. Hadn't thought of those. She does eat bananas but very few. Half a small banana at most a day (I eat the other half cause I'm aware they can bung them up). But the last week I've given her Kiwifruit instead of banana at breakfast as well as Kiwifruit for her lunch.
I don't like having to force medicines into her so will do what I can with the prunes etc and hopefully it makes a difference. It's just making her miserable not being able to poo.
Doc said if these sachet things don't work, then the next step is to try the Coloxl (excuse spelling) drops but I don't want to go down that route cause they can cause cramps and diarrhoea! No thank you!
Thanks for all your suggestions ladies

Oh i just had another thought, does she have a bottle?? Because brown sugar also does the trick (although i'm not sure how keen you would be giving her brown sugar) or even a little on porridge?

I second Kiwi Crush! I had to take it after I had Lily :/ but it's a lot nicer and if she likes kiwi fruit then she might like this too!

Oh poor girl Was just thinking, could you mix the sachet in with her bottle? Not sure if that would change the taste of that too though. Hope you can find something that works!

DS1 went through a short phase of constipation at about 1 year. We gave him baby cereal mixed with prune juice every morning. If we skipped a morning, back to rabbit pellets.
Then all of a sudden about 2 or 3 months later, the issue had just gone. We didn't change anything (other than stopping the cereal & prune juice when we realised things were getting too loose instead)

Kiwi crush worked for us too. Just a 100mls or so every morning in a sippy cup. she wouldn't always drink it all but I would offer it again later in the morning and she usually drank most of it.
We just stop it when things get a bit too loose adn then start it again when the issue comes back.
We were on lactulose too, which worked but the kiwi crush was easier to get into her and I was happier with it as it was natural.

So glad to find this thread. DS has had constipation issues since starting solids. At 8 months we even put him back on puree pumpkin, pear and peach diet and that still didn't really help. Unfortunately he has had an anal fissure so I think he holds them in which makes it worse. My poor boy has never had a banana as I am reluctant to give him anything that will bung him up. Hardest thing ever watching him try to squeeze one out
Will be trying kiwi crush as he loves the taste of kiwifruit. I was going to take him back to the GP but don't want to just be told to give him more Lactulose.

I would take her to a naturopath and not keep going to the Dr who wants to give her stronger and stronger laxatives without finding out the cause of the problem. Its likely to be something as simple as changing her diet. Being that constipated is not normal- if the dr ddoesnt thiunk there is anything physically wrong with her bowel, then I would suggest looking more at the cause to get to the solution. Good luck!
