Topic: canned fruit for baby Posted: 24 September 2011 at 3:10pm |
i'm wanting to give my boy (5mths) some peaches &/or apricots or something like that. stone fruit isn't in season yet. do you think it'd be ok to use standard canned fruit (in juice) and just puree that?
I'd rinse the juice off.

That is what i did as well. I included a little bit of the juice as well, otherwise it was a bit thick

I can't see why not, I use it all the time. I don't like using cans in syrup because I figure it's extra sugar, but a little fruit juice couldnt' go amiss

I do, I don't have a blender and I found it hard to mash straight out of the tin so simmered it with some nutmeg and cinnamon and then mash it from there - works great! And super cheap. I also mix it with semolina (made with water or formula) which thins it out and could be quite nice for a wee 5 month old :)

That's what we used, pureed up a jar or two at a time and froze it in an ice tray so you get nice little cubes for future use (which are also pretty good for a teething bub).

I got the ones with 'natural juice' rather than syrup. Umm otherwise you can wash it off.

yup i do it and its so great! DD has tinned pears, peaches or apricots with weetbix for brekkie each morning i only use the ones in fruit juice tho- not the lite ones or syrup- dont think an 8 month old needs all the extra sweeteners or preservatives IMO.. but tinned fruit can be better than fresh- because its picked at the perfect time so it has the highest amount of vitamins etc, whereas if your fresh peaches have been left sitting for a week- they wont be the same as off the tree ay.

After seeing this thread I bought some cans of fruit and gave DS apricot halves to try today, they were a great size for finger food and when I gave him some more later on that had been in the fridge, they really helped his sore teeth which is a bonus. Definitely cheaper than baby food too. Good all round I think! hehe thanks for the idea
