Hi ladies,

When I first met my midwife at the start of last year one of the things I really liked about her was that although she is based on the North Shore, she was happy for me to birth at Auckland (which is something I have had my heart set on)

However, last week she was saying that it is much easier if we go to North Shore as she needs special permission to attend a birth at Auckland. She also acknowledged that she knows the staff and set up at North Shore like the back of her hand, where as she has only attended two births at Auckland.

Another thing I liked about Auckland is that it means I can go to Birthcare following the birth, where as that is not an option if I give birth at NSH.

Just wanting to hear some different people's experiences with each hospital and get a better idea of what the differences are.

Thanks in advance

Can you get your midwife to 'refer' you to birth care? Sorry not in Auckland so dont know the different proceedures.

My cousin is birthing at NS hospital in the next couple of weeks, I can 'drill' her if you like

Can you do a tour of each facility and see which you feel more comfortable with?

One thing I would definitely urge you to consider is the journey into Auckland hospital whilst in labour (not an issue if you were having an elective CS of course). I was super keen on the idea of birthing at birthcare (so about the same distance as Auckland hosp) but the thought of a car ride, in labour, potentially during peak hour traffic absolutely put me off. We live 10 mins from North shore hosp and that car ride, even at 3am so no traffic, was HELL.

So in the end I had DD at North Shore and it was great - if you do a tour of the maternity ward and birthing suite you'll see it's really modern, bigger birthing rooms than birthcare (can't compare to Auckland hosp), great facilities and, assuming you have family/friends on the shore, easier for them to come and visit you.

My understanding is that if you birth at Auckland, you have to pay for a private room at birthcare or have a shared room. I did have a shared room at NSH, but it was empty a lot of the time and really wasn't a problem at all.

I think that, while you're pregnant, where you give birth and the facilities etc etc are so important, but when you're actually there, as long as the place you're in is clean, comfortable and has nice staff, it really doesn't matter. I think your midwife's knowledge of NSH will also mean she is more in her comfort zone and that can only be a good thing. Also consider your midwife's travelling time to Auckland hosp - you'd hate her to be stuck in traffic with baby on the way!

Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy the rest of your preg (from you ticker I see it's been a long hard road) and have an awesome birth

If you do decide to birth at NSH you can always decide to transfer up to Warkworth birthing centre afterwards. i went up there with #2 and it was brilliant and would recommend it to anyone. And its free

Thanks for the responses! My antenatal classes include a NSH tour and I will also look at Auckland as well so I can really get a feel for both hospitals.

CC - haha yeah drill her for me and pm me to let me know Thanks!!

Hayz - thanks for the thoughts :) Im lucky in that Im 2 mins from NSH and about 12 mins from Auckland (unless I hit peak hour traffic of course!) im sure you are absolutely right that when the time comes I wont be thinking about all the things I am now. And thanks - Im definitely enjoying my pregnancy, the long hard road has really made me appreciate it so much more

If going to Akl and then to Birthcare is something you want to do then, you should do what you feel happy with.

I had similar constraints with my MW with Waitakere and NSH, I had to give birth at NSH and had initially wanted to transfer to Helensville Birthing Centre - as my MW could go there I went to Waitakere instead for my post natal stay, I hated it, it was awful.

I wouldn't worry about being in labour in traffic that was my fear as well, if you are going to give birth that quickly you'll most likely end up at home.

Its the travelling while in labour thats hideous! Don't actually know about the hospitals since I'm not in Auckland sorry I'm just having a random stalk through OB lol but I agree with a PP who said driving while in labour is horrible. I had a 10 minute drive with #1 and it seriously felt like an hour then I had a 40 minute drive with #2 and it was like one protracted nightmare. Theres something about being in a moving car while having contractions that really just throws your game off!

Hope you feel comfortable with your final choice and GL!!

I second being in a car while in labour is hideous, and I only had a 10 min trip down the road. So I would go for the closest option personally. A friend of mine who lives on the Shore was due to birth at Birthcare, but because it was rush hour when she was in labour, she just went to North Shore as she didn't want to be stuck in traffic on the Harbour Bridge.

Oh yes. I was in transition on the trip, which hopefully you won't be, but I can tell you where every single contraction was on the way in. Eeeugh, not a trip I want to repeat in a hurry.

I did not have a good experience after birth care at Auckland hospital. Ended up having a 3rd degree tear so couldn't go to Birthcare and had to stay there. I couldn't handle it it was too busy and noisy with too many people. So I ended up going home before I was ready. 2 of my friends gave birth at NS and it seems like a smaller number of rooms so it is quieter and more relaxed. I know you can't go to birthcare afterwards but what if you get stuck at the hospital like I did. Wasn't good. Oh and it was really hard for my husband to make the trips up and down to there from the shore every day to visit. You think it is not that far but when you have to do it often it becomes a headache, quickly getting something for you from home is not an option.
That said if you have a C section and get a private room at Auckland its not too bad. They looked after us well enough I just didn't like it

I have had 'birthed' at both. The care depends on the midwife you get to be honest. I had more grumpy unorganised old bags at Auckland , but the docs were better at auckland. Only had one annoying midwife at NSH.
I guess if something were to go wrong Id be more comfy at Auckland. Have had far too much experience with their pediatric team (my first babe is a heart kid) and they are awesome
Next time I want Auckland - cause I dont want to have to have a c section - and NSH hospital will not let me trial labour
I will also go to Warkworth to recooperate - sounds awesome!

I've had both my babies at NSH and was very happy with it. I've had friends who have had terrible times at Birthcare, so i think it just depends on how busy they are and the staff you get. NSH has nice facilities and if you're just down the road from it I'd be going there! Must mean you live near me as I'm about 3 mins away, lol!

I just spent 6 days at Auckland hospital- 3 nights post delivery. I had a great stay, if you have a csection the staff care is amazing. Last time I birthed there and had a c-section but transferred to Birthcare. I also found the care good but didn't like the shared rooms so this time decided to stay in the hospital as I wanted the privacy.

Hi PB I birthed at nsh and because they didn't have room in their maternity ward we were given the option of going to warkworth.... Omg!!! What an amazing place to recooperate;) if it wasn't so far I would defo go there with this one too;(

And also my mw didn't believe I was far enough into labour when she was called so only turned up for the pushing part, meNwhile I had lovely staff midwives who took awesome care of me... And it was nice that family who lived close by got to come visit fairly soon after birth;)

Also my understanding is if you live on the shore you re out of the auckalnd dhb so birthcare wouldn't be free?? Is that right? Whereas warkworth was free and oh so lovely (can you tell I loved it up there;))

I birthed at Auckland but live on the North Shore, because my specialists only delivered at Auckland. Mine was a different situation because due to high blood pressure, as soon as I went into labour I had to go straight to the hospital. But it happened at 5pm on a Friday so of course peak traffic, but we managed. I wasn't thinking about anything but the pain haha traffic or otherwise.

In terms of my experience at Auckland hospital, it was awesome. I was meant to go to birthcare but never made it as my blood pressure was still high and feeding wasn't going well yet. So I ended up with 4 days at Auckland and they put me in a private room so we could get feeding sorted and also because my bub weas really distressed and bruised after forceps delivery, and I had some amazing supportive midwives who helped me through all the struggles, tears and emotions until we got it right. I actually didn't want to leave hehe. And I stayed in Auckland hospital twice last year and I thought the food was great hehe. In any case no matter where you go you get staff you gel with more than others, but on the whole I was very happy.

I don't have experience of North Shore hospital to compare it to but I was very happy and I have friends who did make it to birthcare who enjoyed the experience. Similarly I have friends who had a good experience at North Shore but did say they would have liked something like birthcare to go to

Hi PB! I birthed at NSH and found it was great. My midwife was great and the staff midwife who helped with the delivery was lovely. I stayed in the mat unit for 2 nights and the only problem I had was the call bells at night. After being a staff nurse on a hospital ward you get conditioned to respond to call bells so everytime another patient rang theirs I'd wake up, so not really a problem "normal" people would have lol .
Almost all of the girls from my antinatal group birthed at NSH with differring experiences (a couple not so good, a few great) and most of them went up to warkworth afterwards and only have good things to say about the team of midwives (and the food) up there.

Thanks for all the great responses - I really appreciate it

What I really like about Auckland tbh is that they have the best NICU in the country. . Two miscarriages and current strep b leave me feeling a little paranoid and like Raspberryjam said, I just want to know I'm in the safest place on the off chance something go hairy. I hate that I think like this.

I have spent weeks of this year in hospitals with my df sadly - 5 weeks in NSH due to an op and post op complications, and we have been taking 2 trips a fortnight to Auckland for the past 4 months, and for the next 2. I can't say enough about how fabulous our Auckland experiences have been, and NSH for the most part were pretty good but we have had alot of bad experiences also. I know they are completely different departments to maternity, so that's why I am looking for more relevant experiences from you lovely ladies :)

Warkworth is starting to sound great, just a shame it's so far away.. My parents are over the other side of the bridge so it's a long way for them to visit.
Birth care is free for NS residents if they birth at Auckland, otherwise it's over $500 a night, so definitely not on the menu if I go to NSH.

Thanks again and would love to hear from anyone else

PB some of the girls who went to warkworth said the fact it was so far away was a good thing cause it ment less visitors lol. And your DH can spend the first night with you.

My sister's wee boy spent time in the NICU's at Middlemore and Auckland and the SCBU at NSH and she said they are all great.

Your paranoia is totally justified! you've had such a rough time of it, have you thought about having a chat to someone before bubs arrives.
