Me, DD1 (3) and DD2 (5 months) are shortly going to go to the UK on holiday. I have been preparing DD1 for the trip, letting her know we are going on an aeroplane and off to see the grandparents.

She has been fine until a couple of days ago when she suddenly came out with (apropos of nothing) 'the plane will be too high for me'.

I am looking to see if anyone knows of any books out there that will explain the process of flying and waiting around at airports to her. The last thing i want is to have a massive scene as we try to get onto the plane!

Also - a specific question - does anyone know if singapore airline provide blankets for the bassinets? If so, what are they like? And is the mattress in the bassinet ok? I am debating getting a phil and teds cocoon or similar for the flight, but wont bother if it isn't necessary.

Hey Catisla,

I have done one flight on Singapore and the bassinet had a thin mattress. They provided regular long-haul blankets for bubs. I used the long-haul blankets to pad the bassinet and took a flannel wrap and lite blanket to put over DS.

I'm guess that depending on plane design the bassinets could be different though - that is the case on the Emirates flights we've been on. Hope that makes sense?

Go on a bus or train ride and pack a little backpack with toys and snacks that she carries, as she would for the flight. This is a good similated trip. You can't eat on public transport obviously so you will need to get off, have snacks then have the return trip. Talking about 'going for a ride on a plane' was exciting for my son at 3yo because he could associate it with something. If she gets nervous after your practice run you can start talking about which toys/snacks she would pack for the trip.

We were gifted Topsy and Tim go on an aeroplane before our flights last year. It didn't cover long haul but it covered the basics and really helped I think.

For the concept of time we told them on the first plane we would be having dinner, sleeping and then breakfast. And lunch and dinner on the second plane I think (no stopover).

Don't know about singapore airlines but Lufthansa and Air NZ both had snap on covers for the bassinets (similar to what the mountain buggy has on their carrycot). I think they had blankets too but we used sleeping bags as that's what they used at home. The mattress was thin but fine.
