Hi all,
I'd love your advice on this:

My little monkey is now regularly breaking out of her swaddle. The problem is once she gets an arm free she can't get back to sleep as the hand just rubs her eyes, knocks her dummy out and just generally pisses her off.

I thought perhaps that having her arm out might be good as she could suck her hand and self sooth - possibly even put her dummy in if it falls out - but no.

So my questions are:

Do any of you ladies swaddle your bubs?
Have any of them started breaking free? *H has been a Houdini since she was born, but now it is EVERY damn time - I had to get up at 4am this morning to re-swaddle her

Also (for those of you who have passed the swaddling phase) when did you "wean" them from the swaddle and how did you do it?

I tried wrapping her with one arm out and she was not happy.

Do I just wrap her with one arm out and have a crap night sleep (her too) and then after one or two crappy nights she will get used to it and all will be well?

Any advice would be ace.

Cheers
n00b

Also she has started rolling from back to front and I'm scared that she will roll at night while swaddled and thus suffocate!

We started to wean DD off swaddling at 4 months when she went into a sleeping bag, she'd been regularly escaping her swaddle too so I knew it was time to give up. We kept wrapping her with arms out until about a fortnight ago but it was getting looser all the time and to be honest I think it was us addicted to the wrap by that stage rather than her.

She also used to keep herself awake with eye rubbing so for the first month or so of arms-free we put cotton socks over her hands up to her elbows and she'd end up sucking on those as she wasn't a fan of a dummy. When she got used to that we removed the socks and she now grabs the top of her flannelette sheet or her rabbit and she'll suck on that to get to sleep. She doesn't seem to rub her eyes as badly as before.

Oh, another thing we did each time was work on changing the day naps first before we tackled night sleeping just in case she was unsettled. Nothing seems as bad at 3pm as it does at 3am!

Good luck

we stopped wrapping DD around 4 months when she moved into her cot.

We use a safety sleep and sleeping bag. I think this gave DD the feeling of still being wrapped but with arms free, which is what she loved and the reason we moved out of the bassinet early as she loves to sleep with either arm out stretched (now one hand hangs out of the cot!)

Sorry not much help but if you still want to wrap your bubs here is a way to double wrap them. A friend of mine swore by it for her houdini!

Stopping swaddling DD at 14 weeks and ended up going cold turkey as both wraps were in the wash, she'd gone into her sleeping bag the week before and only had her arms wrapped. She slept fine I was concerned about her hands getting cold she sorted that out herself a couple of weeks later and will now sleep with her hands behind her head or underneath her.

have you tried a miracle wrap- that might stop the Houdini? Dunno but I had made my own ones for #1 which were on the big size and had a slight stretch so no houdini's here
We had to start weaning him off them at about 6 or 7 months old as it was summer and very hot... I started wrapping looser and looser until we were eventually using it as a blanket slash blankey. He kept them for a couple of years as blankys .... needless to say he was rather more attached to his wraps than the average baby LOL but as a reflux, any comfort he could get from something, I was happy for him [<3]

I'm big on swaddling and have them all ready and waiting for the next arrival!

I swaddled my girls until they were 6 months, but they were also in Safety Sleeps. They only escaped occasionally but if they did I always had to get up and rewrap them to get them back to sleep.

I went cold turkey at 6 months and we had 3 bad nights before they adjusted. I think they were ready by them anyway.
I attempted to wean them by doing the one arm out thing. One baby wouldn't settle at all and the other would but she would wake a couple of hours later and all hell would break loose.

Check out the Sleepstore swaddles, they have heaps of different ones for little houdini's but they stress if bubs is rolling you should also use a safety sleep.

Thanks for all your advice.
I have already got a "wrap me up" swaddle from the sleep store - H HATES it - she screams up a storm and can't sleep in it.

Right now still doing the double swaddling thing. Am terrified of summer though, she would totally overheat!

DH left her arm out yesterday and she rolled in her bassinet! She has never done that before. I think she needs her arm out to roll - just one more reason why I'd like to keep them in!

Might try and keep her swaddled a bit longer - I don't like the idea of having to let her CIO to get her off the swaddle at this age - maybe when she is a tad older....

Thanks again,

n00b
