I've just had a bit of a weed in my strawberry patch and I see that some of them are producing flowers already. Should I be removing them or just letting them do their thing?
This is the time of the year to be planting them out. I would weed around them, make sure they have plenty of fertiliser and let them do their thing. A good mulch of straw is good to keep the fruit away from the ground and to retain moisture. Horse poo is great for a slow release fertiliser, just make sure you break it up really small.
The lady at the garden centre said to keep picking the flowers off them until labour weekend or they get worn out before the season really kicks in. It might vary by region though - that was for manawatu. We are still picking them off anyway.
