Topic: Sleep help for adults Posted: 18 July 2011 at 3:36pm |
We've had a really rough 3 months and my DH is having issues sleeping. He needs counselling but won't make the appointment yet because he's not ready to talk. He doesn't want to see a doctor and get sleeping pills as he was addicted to them for a long time. I'm looking for a natural solution to help him sleep and wonder if anyone's had experience with over the counter sleep medications/supplements.

lavender on his pillow, warm milk drink before bed, warm bath anything to help him relax.
The other way is to have a notebook and pen beside the bed and get him to write everything down thats bothering him - he can throw it away if he wants. That way he can sleep without everything go round in his head to keep him awake.
Does he exercise? That can also aid sleep.

This is going to sound really messed up - but it worked for me. I read it in a self help book - its called 'feeding the monkeys' where basically if you're having a rough time and you wake at 2am and start thinking over all your issues, well, your body recognizes that 2am is a GREAT time to wake up and think as its much more productive then thinking during the day, how excellent. So you start waking at 2am every night until you've trained yourself to wake. (I know how stupid this sounds). You had to break the cycle - waking briefly and writing it all down is a good idea, or counting, or meditating to block all thoughts from your head except sleep. Personally i meditated in a breath in for 10, breath out for 10 pattern and wouldnt allow myself to think of anything but breathing. I mostly sleep through these days.

The only thing that has worked for me is the writing things down, and even then it will often result in a 2-4 hour sleep in the 24 hours, but better than less than that.
Tried many of the natural remedies, tried warm baths/showers/drinks, relaxing musicm ear plugs, counting, thinking of nothing, walking on grass (yes weird right?)
I tried sleeping pills, but still woke in the night (just not for as long) yet couldn't stand the groggy feeling i got in the morning.
I'm still not a good sleeper, and am lucky to get unbroken sleep in the night (thats without any possible wakeups from children) but i no longer go 2-4 nights in a row without sleep.
Sleep issues as adults suck!

I second the Resue Remedy suggestion - there is a specific sleep remedy version.

I used to take a herbal insomnia relief tablet (I think it was a Blackmores one) which really helped me.
A friend of mine swears by Rescue Remedy as well.
Bowie- it's not stupid, I think you're on to something there!
I really hope something is able to help your DH in the meantime, MrsMojo. All the best to you both!

Don't know if it's applicable in your DH's case, but DH & I always find that we sleep HEAPS better when we don' t drink in the evenings. Even a couple of glasses of wine is enough to affect my sleep these days...

I found the specific Rescue Remedy for sleep helpful when I had pregnancy insomnia. I also used relaxation "tapes" (on my iphone) and listened to those to help me tune out at bed time.
One good relaxation method that worked for me was reciting the alphabet but saying each letter 3 times. You do it slowly so breathe in "A" breathe out "A" breathe in "A" ... in your head of course It gets you to focus on something other than the thoughts in your head, slows down your breathing and it did help me get back to sleep!
Good luck Mrs Mojo, sleep problems really suck
From a totally different perspective, my DH has ALWAYS had sleep issues and reckons "nothing works." He has recently been seeing an ENT about recurring throat infections which turned out to be chronic sinusitis. The ENT has vastly improved his sinus issues = his sleep has improved heaps!

I have trouble switching off and relaxing.
I haven't tried rescue remedy but I use hypnosis relaxation on my ipod.
Also, binaural beats and relaxing sounds work quite well for me too. I use a rain on a car roof noise app and I'm asleep pretty quickly.

Tart cherry juice works a treat. http://www.tru2u.co.nz/products/tart-cherry-juice. You can buy it online, I had a look and there's only one retailer that stocks it in the Wgtn area, and that's in Paraparaumu.
