    Posted: 13 July 2011 at 7:36pm
DS had croup for a few days from Sunday, that is better, but he has now developed a persistent dry cough. I'm nursing him to sleep now, as I always do, and he's coming off every five or so minutes to have a huge cough.

So, my question is, is there anything I can do to try and ease it, or is it just one of those things we have to ride out??

OMG T!! Congratulations!! I just noticed your ticker!!

If you think the cough is a dry throat kind of cough, it can help to give him a teaspoon dipped in manuka honey (not a big dollop, just a bit) and let him lick it off. It's soothing much like a lemon & honey drink. It's been quite useful here.

Lily is still coughing and has that horrible cough too! Was hospitalised for Croup again last week! Umm we were told cough can last 6 weeks! It sucks but have to ride it out apparently although taking them for walks in the cool air is meant to help and I have done that a few times and noticed a huge improvement! Lily isn't sleeping much although not waking she's just up most of the night coughing!

We just got some cough medicine from the pharmarcy (that specialises in natropath stuff) and its formulated for 6 months on. Its mainly manuka honey it like an apple juice base or something. Although in buying it Im not sure I should use it as maybe its better for them to cough and dislodge all the crap in their chest then supress it? Anyway the medicine is called Kiwiherb childrens Chest Syrup.

I'm not sure, I know definitely for the barky cough but when we were discharged the nurse said to make sure I took her out daily until she stopped coughing...

Ohhhhh just thought I'd share....

Vicks on the bottom of feet & rub off the reminants onto chest. Warms socks on over feet.

I read it works for coughs so thought I'd try it. She's stopped coughing!!!!!

eta: I also read one arm about the head also stops coughing, just checked on her & her arm is above her head like I told her so it could be because of either remedy.

Cold air is actually bad for croup...thats why they cough more at night, as the air is cold. Keep the room as warm as you can, vicks on his chest and i always put karvol on the kids pillow and manuka honey on a teaspoon or you could try putting some in some some warm water for him to drink as that will feel nice on his throat and help soothe it.

My brother used to get very very nasty croup as a kid, and he was always really bad in winter in the middle of the night, mum would put vicks in a bowl with hot water and get him to put his head over it with a towel over his head(eyes shut) but he was older then.

If he has difficulty breathing thats when you need to get him into a steamy bathroom, the steam helps open the airways.

Hope hes feeling better soon!

Sheza that's so odd because the Paed and nurse at Wellington have told me both times to give ice or take her for a walk in the cold air and I definitely notice improvement! When she was 8mo I asked if I should be taking her into the bathroom while I showered and they said no - wouldn't do any good!

I have noticed her cough worse at night but told that's normal with croup and the cold air is meant to help!

Yeah I was told exactly the same when we were at hospital for it Nic.

We've been up since 3am while he coughs and vomits the poor little guy, I've rung healthline who've told me to get him to the doctor first thing, but to sit in a steamy room for 20mins, which we're doing now, but it's not making too much difference unfortunately. Will be interesting to see what the doctor says

wrong. kids with croup are encouraged to get into the cold night air. It is well known for children to stage a miraculous recovery between home and A&E

My dcoctor has always prescribed codeine phosphate as a liquid for a child's dry cough. Not sure how early it is ok to give it though.

See thats what confuses me, coughs are worse at night because the air is cold and when DS had croup, he was a lot worse in the cold air, so i kept his chest warm and he got better.

But hey, what ever works for your kids, just giving my advice on whats Ive experienced!

I think kids tend to get worse at night no matter what the illness. And what works for one might not necessarily work for another.

Saw the doctor this morning, basically we just have to ride it out, which is what I suspected anyway. I will be trying the honey though, except stupid me forgot all about it when driving past the four supermarkets on my way home, so will have to pop back out when DS wakes.
Thanks for the tips ladies

Just wondering if its worth using a vapouriser at night in his bedroom, you can normally hire them, some chemists might stock them, works by releasing steam with the menthol liqiud into the room-good for airways and meant to be good for colds, croup, flu, sinusitis, snoring and bronchitis.

Thanks caughtknee I hadn't even thought of that, good idea.

Last night was a heap better, I gave him a lemon honey drink after dinner, had a nice hot shower with him and rubbed Vicks on his feet and although he was coughing some it was nothing like the previous night and no vomiting, so progress
