Topic: Meltdowns in the car help! Posted: 09 July 2011 at 2:44pm |
DD will often have a meltdown in the car and scream her little head off, I need strategies to cope with her when she does this, as I can't stop in the middle of the motorway and calm her, shouting at her doesn't work for either of us.

Turn the radio up...seriously it works. Sing you head off & you can't hear her as well. Will give you time to find a place you can get off the motorway or pull over.
Have you got a mirror so she can see you?

No - I've seen them in other peoples cars, not sure where to get them from?

The mirror helps heaps here. You can get them from trademe, baby factory, or I saw them at the warehouse today too. Scarecrow farm (website) has them on clearance atm too if they still have some.
I keep a stash of little boxes of raisons in the glove box to pass to her when she's getting wound up and they keep her happy for a good 20 minutes, although I'm not sure if Catherine is old enough for those yet, I can't remember when I started giving them to DD.
I found moving DD from the safensound to the radian helped heaps too and I think the biggest change was that she was more upright in the radian. Is it possible to make your seat more upright?
Singing is good too. I have the wonky donkey CD in the car for emergencies I get a little tired of it sometimes but it's easy to sing along to and better than listening to her howl.

Catherine is in her big carseat its at the angle its supposed to be for RF.
She has a couple of toys to play with, the seat does come with a bottle holder which I haven't yet attached, a sippy cup would keep her busy.
Belly Beyond have the mirrors at a reasonable price and they're up the road from us (who knew) I'll go for a drive out there this week and get her one.

We unfortunately get this a bit. I sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star quite loudly and that usually calms him - he will sometimes start up again if I stop singing so I know that it is that that is working (it is also our sleepy time song so it does have soothing associations for him I guess).
I did have to stop giving a ride to other antenatal Mums though as he was much worse when the other babies would make a noise while in the back seat with him.

She's actually really good when someone is in the back seat with her, doesn't happen very often. The mirror thing might work for a while she'll be able to talk to herself.

Yeah, if you get the mirror in the right spot, not only can she see herself, but she can see you too, so it might make a big difference. It's not a perfect solution though - but I don't think anything is!

I used to blast Beyonce Sweet Dreams and Halo and she would go quiet and fall asleep at that age, kinda over the songs now lol. We would sing it and everything.

we used to sing endless rounds of old macdonald had a farm. you could tell when it went on too long as the 'animal' on the farm started to get sillier and sillier.
i remember one time on long trip we sung non-stop from hamilton to auckland.

The mirror could be a good idea as they like seeing other babies at this age/DD did anyway!
Raisins we started giving them to DD around 9-12 months sometime.
I do the radio trick though! And say lets dance and we dance. Takes about 30 sec to work though!
