Topic: Runners, help? Posted: 24 June 2011 at 6:54pm |
So, this came up in conversation recently and now i can't stop thinking about it!
Before i got pregnant i was pretty fit and running often and did so until about 20 weeks when it just got ridiculous. I had done a few marathons and was running avg 10km 3x a week.
Then i broke my vagina having a giant baby.
I really, really want to start running and building up my fitness again but these are things holding me back:
Afore mentioned broken vagina
Lingering aches and pains in hip and pubis (had SPD during pregnancy)
Breastfeeding
Lack of support. For the boobs, i mean.
How do you get back into it? All and any advice appreciated and considered.
(Possibly i just need a kick in the ass)

I'm trying to get myself running again, quite a slow process really .
I found my boobs were quite sore till about the last month when I ran even with a very supportive bra, so that took time. I was a c-section and had SPD so had to wait a while before I could start. I also wasn't allowed to do any exercise most of the pregnancy so having to start from the beginning.
What I'm doing is few mins walking then a few running and keep repeating for bout 30 mins. I need a kick in the ass as well .

TBH I didn't really get back into running properly till DD was about a year old. I ran occasionally before that but my boobs were really sore when I ran till I stopped BFing and my insides felt like they were gonna fall out for ages.
When I did start back more than occasionally I started slow and easy. Lots of walking - I walked several power poles and then ran some etc etc and slowly built up to running longer stretches.
When I did do some running while still BFing I wore two sports bras. Made me sweat a lot but provided heaps of support.
Just go easy on yourself when you start back. It took 9 months to grow your baby and it takes another 9 months for your body to recover, despite what you might read in magazines about celebrities pushing babies out one day and back in the gym the next!

I'm not a runner but started the C25K program before getting pregnant again. Am planning to get back into it in spring, makes running look fun might be too easy for you if you were already a runner, but could be something to get you back into it??

For the boobies try wearing two bra's a woman at my baby and you was obviously a runner and sport fiend and she wore two and found it ok.
I have heard its best to BF before the run as then your empty so to speak.
Ease yourself in and have you been to a physio about ya aches and pains? Hot baths after with baby may help and be fun?

If you are still sore from SPD, get yourself checked out.
I found it started playing up quite badly again when DD was around 4 months. I saw an osteopath, which helped a lot.
I didn't really get back into running until DD was about 14 months, but after a couple of months I got back issues, which still haven't been solved. I do wonder if it is the SPD that I had in pregnancy, that has caused my current back issues(I never had any back problems before I got pregnant).
Anyway, just wanted to say, be careful if you still have pain.
Oh, and it would probably be a good idea to work on your core stability, cause that will help your back heaps when you start running again.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone - i was wondering about the SPD too as DS is nearly 5 months but i still get that horrid feeling in the pubis if i stand from sitting or run up stairs. Thought it'd be all healed up by now but i guess these things take time (i am like a good cheese after all!)
Shelt i was hoping you'd reply since you're superwoman and all Rachelsea thats an awesome link!

I started jogging from when Alex was 2 weeks old. Trick with boobs is either layers for support or invest in the best sports bra in your size.
I didn't have the SPD issues so maybe you should get that looked at

I ran after breastfeeding too and wore two bras. And changed out of them pretty much the instant I got back to the house.
I set myself some small goals - run to the end of the street, run around the park etc etc until I was back running a 5km loop. I was walking straight after Alex's birth (and he was big too, 4.7kg and a natural birth) but I didn't start running until around the 14 weeks mark. Probably too much information, but before that I tried a couple of times and it felt like my insides were going to fall out so I went back to walking and did more pelvic floor exercises!
In terms of a kick - I found if I told people I was going for a run that day, and put on my running gear by a certain time then it was far more likely to happen.

i bought an industrial strength sports bra and its fab! well worth the money (and going from a b cup to a dd cup was so weird having this issue at all!). i have also just started doing my 5km walking loop but running alternate lampposts to get up the hill and telling myself its ok to walk when i need. i am hoping to run a half marathon in october although progress is slow so who knows!
i am also doing pilates once a week to strengthen my core muscles and have started doing lunges every second day to strengthen my thighs.
its so not fun having to get fitness back but i am hoping by the end of the year i am back in shape (when dd is 1 and i will be thinking about ttc again)
