Have you had a break or anything? I pumped for the first 3 months and then on/off for the last year but when I *needed* to pump about 3 weeks ago I couldn't. Absolutely nothing.

I'm not a good cow these days either, I still have plenty of milk as it goes everywhere when DD pulls off. When it comes to pumping I get barely 5mls.

I've heard that pumping output can decrease over time, but I've not had much personal pumping experience. Have you read the Kellymom page on pumping? There's a lot of advice on there. I hope you find something that helps!

It can be a bit of a psycological issue, are you a bit stressed, or overthinking it a bit? I know I used to sometimes. I found sitting with very warm cloths on my breasts used to help letdown if I was struggling a bit. HTH xx

Try drinking a big glass of water as you pump. That used to help me.

No no break, i have been pumping every day solidly for 6.5 months now! i do get abit stressed at 4am one cuz the cats come down with me and yowl and i worry about them waking the baby! was also abit cold this morning as i didnt wear dressing gown hmmm. maybe the cloths could help will try that.
and yup i always have water when i pump, i agree it does help!
So today i got fenugreek and blessed thistle which are meant to help, and calcium magnesium supplement. also boiled the pump parts i can (as apparently philips pumps can do better when boiled occaisonally) and i got a great letdown tonite (altho i did last nite too) so will see wot happens this morning if E STTN again so I can do a 4am-ish pump.
THx for the advice so far. really trying to avoid formula topups if i can, the wee guts has 250-300ml of milk from her 1 nite bottle before bed and its alot to keep up with (no way she would get that off me!).

CJ --- I know that as Bubs grow bigger their suck is better so sometimes it just because the pumps suck isn't as good as the babies suck hope you understand what my brain is so feebly trying to say (I think its baby brain as I just can't find the right words any more) Hope the supplements ect work for you though i was so disappointed when i had to give up expressing

THis morning no letdown either at 4am, but i got letdown last nite so am abit confused! will see wot happens in the next 2 days.

Hope it picks up for you CJ.
I massage beforehand and pretty much just start pumping when I feel the letdown coming - often didn't find the pump could do it on its own. Although the avent cushion thing did help, but then I'd have to take it off to actually get milk.
Ooh also emotional tv can help, I found out while watching someone have an emotional reunion with their kids...but that might be hard to orchestrate

i think the fenugreek and blessed thistle have worked, feel much fuller today and got 350mls from 3 pumps which is great, more than E eats from 1 bottle now (just!). happy mummy!
I did use the cushion when i 1st got the pump but made the flange abit sml for my nipple, but now my boobs have shrunk abit might work again!
I also tried massaging around 11pm at nite cuz apparentl sometimes just massaging them can make your bosy think its time to produce more milk!

Hi, I don't know if anyone has suggested this.... but I had a terrible time trying to express... it just didn't work for me... then about 2 months before I weaned a friend suggested that whilst trying to pump... repeat the words over and over out loud... " MILK MILK MILK....etc" and Holy Moly... it worked... the milk just gushed! Weird I know but it worked!
I hope it works for you!
DH had a good laugh at me! LOL I was laughing at myself too!

HAHAHA that's funny GG i will try that tomorrow!
AM off the fenugreek now and just on blessed thistle and still seems to have worked really well for me, consistently round 350ml for 3 pumps (and 1 is only a half pump of 1 boob).

I exclusively pumped for DS1 (he was 30 weeks prem) for 5 months, then I just lost the milk.
Nothing had changed, I just found that one side dried up completely and then I was getting less and less from the other. I think you reach a stage where the hormones just aren't there to help anymore, I had my periods back, and pumping was just no longer an option for getting enough milk.
Also too, as bubs gets bigger, they need more milk in 24 hours, but it is really really hard to increase the volumes of milk to cover that when only pumping. I found that as my freezer stocks dwindled I was getting more and more stressed about pumping enough to keep DS1 going, which obviously didn't help my mental health or milk production.
I decided that I had done my time, I had been SuperMum for long enough, and it was time to stop pumping and start enjoying my baby more (and resting more) in the times I would have been pumping.
Good luck

Haha GG i did do it, not noticeable, but on saying that i didnt do it today and got some less... so might try it again int he wee hours this morning. hahaha!
hmmm yeah maya i think when AF is back alot changes, thankfully mine not back yet, just some random spotting here and there.
We are hoping to have got past the needing more milk as older, as we started E on solids a month ago, so as she gets hungrier we just give her more food instead - infact have got her 250-300ml nite expressed BM bottle down to just 200ml most nites YAY!! maybe that is easier when not pumping exclusively - i only pump for 1 bottle the rest i BF, she just never got enough BM off me to sleep at nite for the last bottle which is why we do the bottle. i agree re the stressing as the freezer stocks go down, esp when used to having heaps (I was a super pumper - i got 300ml every 3 hours in the beginning so i know my boobs are capable of it!! gutted cuz i threw out so much milk cuz i had no room).
I agree tho, 5 months is an awesome effort, well done! you want to give them the BM so much more when they are prem eh to give them every chance you can. AM hoping having those supps helped my milk get back to where it needs to be, seems good for now and am down to 1 supp, i will do the other if i need to again, but am expecting her milk needs will taper off from now.
hmmm that was a huge post, 1 glass of wine and i cant stop babbling!

I could only pump while baby was drinking on the other side. A pain but otherwise not a drop would come out no matter what. Perhaps that could work.
