Topic: Following on..re TL/C-Section Posted: 20 May 2011 at 11:52am |
Following on from the Breastmates thread on FB...(coz I kinda felt like I was thread jacking )
My story is that I have always suffered from horrendous monthly periods (right from age 12, every darn month!) and I was planning on when I have my 3rd and final bub to elect for a c-section so they could do a hysterectomy. The MW/Doc on the thread say that most Doctors wouldn't consider doing a hysterectomy due to excessive blood loss and the health benefits of keeping the ovaries. However if I opt for a TL, the periods (seemingly in most women's cases) get heavier and more frequent and it may not work. And I don't want that coz, really, it's already pretty darn bad.
It's not even really about contraception although that is a bonus...it's more about never wanting the witch again after the last baby.
What would you do now if this was you?

my periods are like what you describe.
except i havent had any children, just one horrid M/C that lasted 3 weeks requiring me to use Newborn naps as pads.
I have a mirena IUD now and I dont even have periods, more like heavy spotting for 5days max (I only use a tena long liner as a pad now vs maternity pads as normal pads)
my old cycle was ultra heavy AF for 10-14 days and then two weeks later i would get AF again (28days from day1-> day1)
but my IUD is the best thing ever. Its been in for a year on the 31st and ive had 8 periods and the longest was 5 days and if it wasnt for the cramps I would have thought it was just random spotting

I would want the hystorectomy if I was in her shoes. I had really bad periods (like what you explained) and as a result I got a Mirena put in all funded by my insurance company. I was asked by my gyne to try this first and then after a few years will do the hystorectomy. She could try a Mirena first if she wanted to to see how that goes.

Yeah that might be an option...I guess I've never really considered it as I feel a bit weird having something wedged in up there.
How did you find the Mirena, Mummy Becks?

they dont always remove ovaries with a hystorectomy, I had mirena put in this time last yr and 2wks later it came out and i have had the worst af's since then, i have finally managed to have normal afs in the last 2mths. If I had major problems and was having a c-sec I would just ask for a partial hystorectomy only thing taken is uterus, ovaries are left so hormones arnt effected as bad.
I could be completely wrong but thats just from what searching i have done.

That's what I was hoping to have done Rorylex. However they two medical pro's in the original thread suggested that no doctor would do it due to risk of major bleeding...
It seems such a waste of everyone's time and energy to have to go back in and open a person up to do another major op....Does anyone have more info on the risks???

It took a while for it to settle but once it did it has been great. I have had it in for 2 years now and I love it. I don't bleed much (if at all). However I will still be getting a full hystorectomy in a few years. I have issues with my ovaries hence why I am going for the full one.
Yep it does seem like a waste of time not doing it at the same time, but dr's usually have their reasons.
