    Posted: 11 May 2011 at 3:20pm
Has anyone had them or know what causes them?

For the last four days I have had these palpitations in my chest that feel like a flutter, sort of like my heart is skipping a beat or something, but it's right in the centre of my chest. It happens on and off throughout the day and it's starting to freak me out!

I'll go to the dr if it doesn't go away but just wondering if anyone else has experienced it before? TIA.

Are you stressed out or really tired? I had heart palpitations after giving birth, was no doubt from stress/tiredness etc, I could feel my heart beat, you know like without trying haha! And it missed beats a lot, or it seemed to.
It went away after a few days, probably after I caught up on some sleep and had calmed down a bit.
The midwife said it was ok, not exactly normal but I wasn't gonna have a heart attack or anything!

in early pregnancy with DD3 I had this odd feeling of missing a beat kinda thing...I read it's not that uncommon due to the increase in blood I think. Hope it's the same reason for you! I also get it a bit when I'm highly anxious...

If it's happening on and off during the day I'd definitely get it checked out.  One of the things you can try when it happens is to hold your breath and bare down to increase thoracic pressure (just what was suggested to me by a nurse when I was talking about it happening to me).  Apparently the increase in pressure can kick it back in to rhythm.  But I would definitely check it out.

Commonly what it is, is an ectopic heartbeat that (I think) comes from the Ventricle rather than the Atrium. It is usually nothing (to be worried about) however there are things that make it worse and things that make it better and sometimes you need to get it checked by the Doc:

I get them when im really tired or stressed out, and also when Im low in iron. So maybe get your iron checked? and also take some deep breaths when it happens and that helps it settle down.

Yes I have had them on several occasions.
I have had them on meds. They are horrible & really freak you out.

Are you taking any medication? It could be a combination of things, even vitamins. Are you drinking a lot of caffeine?

As it has only just started happening in the last few days have a look to see if you changed anything or added something.

Do you have any other symptoms?

Thanks guys, you are all so helpful! Thanks for that link nathansmummy.

I really don't think it's from being stressed out because I have been getting it mainly in the evening when I'm relaxing and I don't feel overally worried about anything.

I had my iron checked last month and it was fine.I don't take any medication apart from clomid but that was three weeks ago. No other symptoms apart from I get quite breathless when it happens but that could be because I'm freaking out about it! I didn't realise it happens sometimes during pregnancy, it would be nice if it was that!

LR! That was exactly what I've been having, and at night for me too - so even though you might not think you're stressed it could totally be because of the eartquakes and stuff.
Orr could be because you haven't seen me as that was my problem remember ;) Ha-ha.

BUT Here's hoping it's because you're UTD!

Now that you say that Booboo I remember you mentioning something like that the other day! Maybe it's some sort of virus going around or something then? I honestly don't think I am stressed out, but maybe I am and I don't realise it, I'm probably going loopy

Nope, no pain Jazzy.

Oh thats a good point Booboo, you could be stressed out with out even knowing it LR, or just on edge even due to the quakes etc. You're not going loopy hun Have you got some rescue remedy spray? I would give that a go at night and see if it helps and if your still having them every night in a few days see ya dr

I have my fingers crossed for UTD though

I say Dr, if you can not pin point any change & are not on meds, then off to the Dr you go. Get your blood pressure checked.

It could be stress that you have suppressed which is totally understandable.

I had them throughout my pregnancy and was told it was normal and just all the extra blood when pregnant, strain on my body, etc. I also get it when tired, stressed, hungry...

I get them often, most often when I'm relaxing/reclined/trying to go to sleep, worse when I'm preg. Mentioned to Drs on several occasions & none of them have seemed concerned, a lovely nurse suggested I cough when I feel it happening, it seems to help!

I've had them from time to time for as long as I can remember, they never seem to be relted to anything in particular. My Mum and my sister both get them too. I actually quite like the feeling, as weird s that is

Yep honestly LR I didn't think I was stressed at all - but few people said to me that I might not have realised it - and that was the case.

How you feeling now?

Well, it's funny because I can actually say I am stressed today with our insurance hassles (STATE suck by the way) but I haven't had any chest palpitations. Go figure.
