In August I'm looking at driving to Wellington with my sister and her DD's (4yo, 8mth)

We're going to take a whole day to get there so we can get plenty of stops in for the girls...

We were wondering other than Te Papa what else is there down in Wellington for kids? We've thought Zoo but August weather may not play game on that one.

Also can anyone recommend some child friendly and not so expensive accomodation (My sister is down to 1 income so we'll be on a budget)

TIA!

If you're driving down, then the Lindale Centre near paraparaumu off state highway 1 is a good stop off - they have a lovely petting farm.

The botanic gardens if you get a dry day is good - they have an excellent kids' play park. You can ride up in the cable car and walk down back to the city.

I thought Lindale had gone very down hill lately.

There is the Southward Car Museum if you're into those sorts of things. Maybe not so much for girls.

The Zoo sometimes has $5 wednesdays (they did last Aug) and it was a beautiful day so you never know!

Wellington Zoo do normally do $5 Wednesdays. Just dress up warm. They have done this the past few Augusts. So hopefully do it again

Also highly recommend Junglerama. DD loves it. Its so much fun.

Pools also perhaps. Train ride from Wellington out to Paraparaumu (lots of tunnels that way)

Also the train to Petone and get the Dom Post ferry back.

The waterfront is pretty cool. If the 4yo has a bike/scooter then she'd have heaps of fun along there. There's also a park in Oriental Bay beside Freyberg Pool and one in Waitangi Park I think.

Staglands near Upper Hutt is great. Zealandia is another good option.

Oooh Tinytown in Kilbirnie is a 'rainy day' option. It has toys ( cars, little bikes, playhouses, bouncy castle....) and also a big skate rink where you can rent roller skates or bring along your bike / scooter.

As is the swimming pool in Kilbrinie. The kids play area is good.

I had thought the farm at Lindale had closed down (there was something in the news about this last year) but it appears not. Not many shops out there anymore though.

Depending on when you're coming down there's a group that organises buggy walks. They're held on the first Thursday of the month and the location changes each month. It's free and free coffee is provided at the start!!

Staglands was good and free for either 4 and under or under 4 - can't remember which sorry! It's a bit of a long drive out there though.

The City Gallery also has a Gallery Babes even on (I think) the last Wednesday of the month. It's for mums and bubs and is free.

You could also hire one of those frog things and bike around the waterfront!! If it's a nice day of course. You might need a front pack for the 8mth old though

It also depends where in Wellington you are staying and if you mind drive to other parts of Wellington for entertainment.

The Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua is awesome!!! It has a spa for adults, one for kids, a wave pool. It's just awesome, awesome, awesome!   ...can you tell I like it?....

If you want to go to a cafe that's very kid friendly and you're also into Chipmunks and Dressmart. Go to B.B's cafe at Dressmart, Tawa. It's got a play area and outdoor part to the cafe. Plus, yeah, Dressmart rules and Chipmunks prices are really good I think.

Yeah, the Botanical Gardens, they are awesome aye catisla.

They are so pretty and the playground is lovely.

Oh, I just thought of another place. Aotea Lagoon, just past Porirua, by the police college. 1. It has duck ponds, a little rose garden, the lagoon, the big playground, the littlie's playground and you can also get some exercise while you are there, if you're into that. It got exercise spots around the lagoon you see.

Oh you could check out Somes Island or Kapiti (though think it's a bit pricey)

If your girl likes horses, out at Makara (its like 10mins out of town) they have trekking places.. but they also take little ones for rides around the arena on the horses. My cousins daughter had a blast
