Heya
Just a random question....around what age is it the you can def tell weather your child is a lefty or a righty?

From what I've read its not till they are about 3 years, that they decide. And you should give them objects in the midline, so they can choose which hand to use.
Although I notice that Shel tends to favour his right hand. And will pass something from his left to his right to draw etc.

Im not sure exactly what age but I'd say DD is totally a righty as thats the arm she throws with!
Shows its totally chance not a genetic thing as both DH and I are leftys... though try telling that to DH's granny, who thinks cos we are both left that DD HAS to be a lefty and she doesn't see why she'd be anything else

Im not sure either but DD has always been a lefty. Up until 2 years i would place things in the middle or let her decide which hand to use but since 2 years its pretty obvious she is left handed.

Yeah the reason i ask is coz DS is so (quite obviously) left handed but becoz it's too early to state he's a lefty.
I always pass things thru the midline and he will always take with the left. If somethings in his right he swaps. He pushes his cars around with the left etc etc etc...
I'll just wait and see hehe will be interesting. Who knows he might turn out to be a righty

awwww i thought i was spotting DS being a lefty (he rolls that way, grabs that way, sucks that thumb - won't touch the right thumb etc) but i guess that thumb is just tastier..interesting!

I read somewhere it wasn't until 3 either.
Bowie - as a littlie DS preferred his left side for everything, then somewhere around 10months it all changed.
Will be interesting to see. DH and I are both right handed, but most of my family are a bit ambidextrous

So I googled it...according to babycentre.com babies can show signs as early as 6months but it's not properly determined until 2-3yrs then it's not "set in stone" until about 5yrs.

Interesting - I kept looking for signs that Campbell was a leftie when he was younger (I didn't want to be the only leftie in the family anymore!), but no, he's definitely going to be a right hander. Throws, draws and does most things with his right hand.

DS was the same when he was really little, it seemed really obvious he was a leftie and both DH and I are too. But then he decided to do a switcheroo and started using both and then right, then left etc.. so not sure again but DH reckons he always kicks with his left so must be a lefty

DD is 2 years 7 months and has always been a lefty she holds pens and cutlery only using her left hand. I am a lefty, DS is righty, and DH is righty but all his family are lefties.

My DD is most definately a lefty. Not sure where she gets it as both our entire families are rightys. I spoke to kindy about it and they said they can change to the opposite hand up until about 6 years old.
Sometimes DD will use her right hand but she looks so awkward, yet she looks so natural when she writes with her left.

DS1 is 2yrs 3mths and eats and draws with his left hand and throws and kicks with his right hand/foot! Who knows what he'll end up doing.

My ds who is now almost 7 is a lefty. He throws and everything with his right hand though but writes with his left hand. He showed signs quite early on and my son who is 15months also favours his left hand.
