Topic: the mini pill Posted: 25 April 2011 at 1:57pm |
I'm just wanting to hear people's experiances on the mini pill, I haven't used contraception for 6 years and have no idea where to start lol.
I'm breastfeeding and have been told by the midwife that it's the one to go on. Has anyone had it effect your milk supply? do you get af on it like the normal pill? did it effect your moods? (I'm shocking on the normal pill). does it make any difference if you have PCOS? argh all my questions lol
Also what do the rest of you take/use and how have you found it? all info appreciated
Thanks heaps

I was on noriday before ttc and went back on when ds was about 3 months. I stopped it a few months later as forgot to take it so often (have to take it within 3 hours of same time every day or have up to 1 week using other contraception as well), there was no point. Can't remember it affecting my supply when I started but when I stopped was supper full for a week or so. I had really bad moods on normal pill and had no obvious problems on the mini pill. No idea about pcos sorry.

I took a few different minipills while breastfeeding my babies but hated the lot. It made me bleed week on week off (drove me nuts). I had constant headaches and dizzy spells. Yet after feeding and going back onto the combined pill ( i used Loette) I had no side effects at all.. weird huh... I am worried now after bubba is born as to what I am going to take as I am not going near the minipill. I have been looking into the implant but jury still out on that too. Best of luck

For me, the mini pill caused no side effects at all! It didn't do anything to my supply either, which was good.
I took it for a time years ago, and all it did was give me weird, irregular periods, but I can't judge if it did that postpartum, as that stuff tends to be screwed up anyway.

I got weird, irregular periods too, but they were really light, on Noriday.
I took Noriday for years before TTCing as it was the pill that gave me the least side effects (I did feel a bit sick/dizzy for the first few months though). I didn't realise I was depressed on it until I went off it and suddenly they world was such a lovely, bright place!
We have just been using condoms for a few years now (with no surprise pregnancies).
Sorry no idea about milk supply or PCOS

I took the mini pill while I was BFing my girls, it didn't affect my supply.
I had annoying spotting/bleeding constantly (week on, week off) for the first 2 months and then after that it was great with no periods.
The only bad point for me was the 3 hour window to take it cos I also kept forgetting. So as soon as I stopped BFing I went back on the combined pill.
I read in a Little Treasures mag there is now a combined pill you can take while BFing but I can't remember the name.

With my first I had the annoying spotting for a good 3 months so I stopped taking it.
With my 2nd I thought I would try it again I also found that my moods were terrible with it and I was depressed, so much happier off it, it didn't affect my supply.
I hear the implant can be given while breastfeeding.
We just use C's

I went on it when K was 6 weeks old. It did give me a period, but didn't affect my milk. I then got no period for 6 mths, at which time I went off it as wanted to have another baby, got my period back 1 mth after coming off it and then got pregnant.
TMI perhaps but it really did affect my libido and not in a good way. DP loved it when I went off it lol.
For taking it, I tried in the evening to start with but I was always forgetting in the time limit so changed to morning to take with breakfast (babies wake you up in the morning anyways) so I would just make sure I took it between 7 and 10am.

I've been on noriday since DS was about 8months.
I got AF back when he was 10months and have only had 2 since, so very irregular. It hasn't affected my milk in any way, DS is syill happily bfing.
Like someone else mentioned, it has really affected my libido, I took a break from the pill for about a month-6weeks and things were very different.
No other side affects I can think of.

I have PCOS and it was nothing but havoc for me. I bleed all the time. I ended up giving up on it and just using condoms. I didn't have a good time with any pills and went with the Mirena.

hmmm thanks ladies, like everything, so different for everyone lol so good to hear all experiences though! I think i'm leaning towards giving it a go and if it's no good for me then trying something else. With my PCOS I hardley ovulate anyway and need drugs to make me do it but good old murphy will probably pay me a visit and give us a wee surprise if we do nothing lol (not that i'd mind at all it's DH that would have the heart attack hehe)
Becks how have you found the mirena?

I went on it at 5 weeks postpartum and had my period for a week every second week for about 6 weeks or so. I very nearly quit at that point, but several ladies on here had had similar experiences, so I decided to stick it out for 3 months, by which time it was fine.
I had no problems with supply - DD's just weaned this weekend (16 months), but that was to do with pregnancy killing my supply, not the pill! I got AF back at 11 months PP, a second one 6 weeks later, at which point I stopped the pill and got UTD that cycle.
I'll definitely be going on it again after this baby.
The tricky bit was taking it within 3 hours every day, but I just made sure it was part of my morning routine and mostly remembered.

hated the mini pill - made me so crabby when I was on it 6 yrs ago, so after DS I decided not to go on it at all. Unless you are bf I would suggest the combined pill or even the injection (though I wouldn't stay on the injection too long).

I personally did not have a good time on the mini-pill. So I have now switched to getting a Jadelle implant, which is fine for those who BF'd.
I got very depressed on mini-pill and though AF did disappear for like 10 months after the first 6 wks, which I found nice.

I used to take Cerazette in the UK and it is THE best POP. I think I'd tried most of the others on the market here and had almost continuous bleeding. I just saw it advertised here in OH Baby so I guess you can get it here now.
Editing to say - I'm pretty sure it has a 12 hour "oops I forgot" window too

Once it settled down it has been great. Over the past year I have had 3 proper decent AF's and the rest have been little spotting that have been annoying more than anything.
For my PCOS, I have found it wonderful. I don't have that cyst feeling I used to have.

I just went to the GP to get a script for the minipill and I'm back on Noriday again like I was the last time I was BFing. I don't have any problems at all on it, no bleeding, no effect on libido or breastmilk supply. I was going to ask my GP about Cerazette though as I saw it advertised as having a 12 hour window, but I forgot!!! Baby brain! Not sure if it's subsidised like Noriday though, that's really cheap.
