Topic: Kenepuru (wellington) Posted: 25 April 2011 at 1:35pm |
With DS I had a C-section at wellington hospital, stayed for 4 or 5 days. I didn't have a LMC at the time (long story) and no body ever suggested transferring out to Kenepuru.
I'm going in for a C-section at wellington this week. I hear sometimes mum and baby get transferred to Kenepuru after a day or two at wellington hospital. I think I'd like to stay in care for a while as I'm a bit scared of going home a new baby, a CS scar and dealing with a toddler. (DH is fantastic and will be fine with DS and he'll visit too).
What's Kene like? Is it nice. Is it nicer (friendlier) than staying in wellington hospital?

Sorry, I haven't been to kenepuru, but I'm told it's much nicer than Wellington, own room, tv, lots of attention from staff.
However I had my second csection in December at Wellington (elective) and they strongly hinted on the fourth day (after three nights stay) that I was well enough to go home!
And yep, I had a toddler (15 month old) at home too.
Oh and if they try and make you share a room in postnatal, kick up a bit of a fuss. Both times they tried to get me to share, but we eventually got my own room (they're supposed to give them to caesar ladies, amongst others, but it's a bit random).

I went out to Kene after DD2 and compared to the old post natal ward it was bliss with DD1 I shared a room & bathroom with 3 others and it was not much fun - no one told me about Kene.
At Kene I had my own room with my own bathroom and the room opened into a lovely courtyard which was very nice as it was February and stinking hot. The midwives seem much nicere and less rushed than In Wellington.
Don't know how it compares to the new maternity unit though as I haven't been there.

I would stay at Wellington Hospital.
I had a c-section there in July, own room and stayed five days. It was lovely and quiet. There are a lot more staff than there used to be, the longest I ever waited after ringing my bell was five minutes. At Kene there is one midwife for six rooms (plus anyone who has come in labouring, and their midwife isn't there yet). So there can be some delays. I enjoyed having the TV on the last night - it made for slightly more entertaining night feeds.
Private rooms are not for women with C-Sections automatically. They are based on clinical need, and are allocated based on the judgement of staff at the time. For example, a woman whose baby is in NICU - it could be unfair to make her share a room with someone whose baby is in with her.
Basically, you may get a single room at Wellington and will at Kene. At Wellington the response time of midwives is really prompt, at Kene it will depend on what the one midwife on is doing.
Good luck.

Kene was lovely, lots of personal help, friendly MWs, and they wernt ever too busy.
I found Wgtn a lot less personal, and were often more noisy/disruptive than Kene.
I dont think you get to stay in hosp long (even after a c section) 2nd time around, most people I know have been nudged around day 2 and more strongly nudged around day 3, so it might not be worth it to transfer (unless you live out that way?)

Kenepuru is really nice, i didn't have the chance to go their (my baby was in neonatal unit so they kept me at Wgtn) but i was hoping to go there, my SIL was there. nice rooms. all to yourself! don't get your own room at Wgtn usually.
