The lack of sleep is driving me nuts and I really have to do something about it! DD has had a dummy from day 1 as she wouldn't stop screaming. She only has it in her cot, settles really well with it, and often spits it out once she goes to sleep. She is also wrapped for all her sleeps in a miracle wrap. This has been working ok until about 2 months ago when she started rolling and fighting the wrap, and waking up for her dummy. The last week she has started rolling while wrapped which isn't very safe and also uncomfortable so she wakes screaming. When we tried to ditch the wrap (both arms out, then one arm out), she pulls the dummy out - it's the first thing she does. Then she either plays with it quietly and then gets overtired and starts to scream and is impossible to settle; or she pulls it out and throws it away and can't get it. Without the dummy she screams and screams.

What do we do? We obviously need to ditch the wrap and potentially the dummy, but how?!

I had a peke moe for Gabrielle to transition her from being wrapped to not being. It worked really well. Here is the link Peke Moe It was well worth it. I stopped wrapping at approx 8 months and used the peke moe till G was about 14 months. Might be worth a shot?

Oh man, we had exactly the same problems. I still love both - and would use them again, because they were great when he was little - but at some point you have to get rid of them.

I ditched the wrap first, because he was rolling in it like you mention, and it was a real safety issue. Because of that, I had to just take it off him and go cold turkey, I couldn't do the one-arm-out thing that is sometimes recommended. The first night was hard, the next two were hard-ish, and you'd never know he'd had it after that. Because that worked so well, I just did the same thing with the dummy a few weeks later. Again, after three days (the first of which was very hard work) he didn't need it at all.

Best of luck however you end up approaching it

OMG - I was about to write an identical post!!!

I tried the one arm thing and the first thing I heard when I left the room was the sound of the dummy hitting the floor as he threw it away!! Then he wanted it back!!

I will watch this thread with interest.

Oh Yea we soooo went through the exact same thing!

DD had always been a terrible sleeper and never showed any signs of sleeping through so we were too scared to not wrap her and/or use a dummy so we continued on and it actually got worse to the point when she would sleep a couple of hours in her cot and then the rest of the night in our bed fighting the wrap - we would re-wrap up to 3 or 4 times a night - it was just ridiculous! Some nights she would wake every 20 mins - I have no idea how I did it.

Eventually at about 10/11 months we gave up and thought it cant get any worse so we went cold turkey with the wrap (best thing we ever did) and she was fine with it. She still has her dummy and will occasionally cry out for it but she sleeps through 6.30 - 7 every night (that was at 1, literally to the day).

Sorry for the novel but you are not alone with this issue and I think its almost that they need to go through these stages (pulling the dummy out etc) until they get over the novelty of it - as it does seem very common Good Luck

I second the peke Moe, my boy was wrapped until 8 mo and I couldn't unwrap him because he would pull out his dummy, I put him in a peke moe and he started sleeping through, it was brilliant. Now he doesn't need it and still sleeps well.

Argh I so feel your pain. My boy needs his dummy to fall asleep but he loves to pull it out of his mouth and hold it up and stare at it, and he knocks it out of his mouth constantly, soooo annoying. Im thinking of just going cold turkey myself but scared to! He has a wrap me up swaddle so arms are in but I managed to get him to sleep in a sleeping bag with arms out a few times which has worked too. My boy is also rolling at every opportunity and has rolled with the wrap me up swaddle in his safe t sleep!

I had a look at the pekemoe and it seems that they can still get their hands to their mouth? I tried little miss in a wrap me up and she still managed to pull dummy out, so she might do the same with a pekemoe....?

tried cold turkey yesterday and was a total disaster, she screamed and screamed... might try the safety sleep first and then try getting rid of the swaddle in a couple of weeks. So hard

Yea... Jacob did the same SpecialK. I had his hands in socks - didn't stop him getting the dummy out at all.

I guess it all depends on how much screaming you're happy to live with for a day or so... I just lived through it and he stopped eventually, but I know lots of people aren't comfortable with that.

Yeah with the peke moe she could still pull the dummy out but to be honest if she doesn't want the dummy it won't make any difference if she can pull it out with her hands or not - she could just spit it out. My girl for some reason took ages to figure out that she could still pull her dummy out with the peke moe on - maybe coz her hands were still covered?

Anyway, good luck. Hope things work out well for you.

Sorry I cant help at all, DD has never taken to a dummy and will only sleep wrapped in the day. If her arms are "trapped" at night she will wake and cry, with her arms free she wakes and chews her sock or glove covered hands and babbles away to herself. Daytime we cant get her to sleep with arms floating about free! We havent tried a peke moe but have an ergo cocoon from the sleepstore that means she can still get her hands in her mouth, so similar thing maybe. I'm not looking forward to weaning her off the wrap though either, but she isnt rolling in it yet.

Maybe get a dummy chain so they can find the dummy again & it doesn't get biffed to far?

Hi

I have had some success today!!! Just put my beautiful little man down for a sleep, unswaddled but with thick socks on his hands. He knocked the dummy out, but then sucked his hand through the sock for a while. He started to cry, so I put the dummy in and he fell asleep straight away.

So I am going to keep putting him down unswaddled. And then hopefully he will just be able to fall asleep sucking his socked hands!
Then eventually take the socks off.

Maybe I should try that hila!

Going cold turkey today with the wrap, so much screaming...hopes did you do controlled crying with your boy or settled him some other way? Miss is in the buggy now but I am worried that I am replacing one sleep association with another one...

I used the sleep store's 'verbal reassurance technique' - pretty much going in to reassure them (not pick them up) after 5, 10, then 15 minutes (and every 15 after that). To be honest, I really don't think that's any different to letting him cry it out - but it made me feel a little better

Here's a link to their page on it.

I just left him in his cot, but then again he's always slept best in there anyway, he doesn't go down easily in a pram (unless I dont' want him to, of course )

ETA to hang in there, this part of any change to a routine is no fun at all, no matter how you approach it!

Yay we are getting somewhere - thank you so much ladies for you help! I have her sleeping in a sleeping bag - we went cold turkey - and the socks over her hands worked a treat, she can still knock it out of her mouth but she doesn't/can't pull it out and play with it for ages.

Now to get rid of the dummy!
