Hopefully if talking about poo's is TMI for you, you haven't come into this thread as it is all about poo!

DS is nearly 1 and we have been struggling with frequency for a few months now. He can go up to six times a day, never a huge amount though. Some are tiny but some are big. The frequency wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the fact that it makes him so sore, almost as if the poo is burning his bum. Even when I change him straight away his bum is bright red.

Have had a couple of cases of bad rash that we have got on top of with loads of nappy off time. After the last bout of bad rash I decided to take him to the GP to see if there was some super-duper cream we could use and what she suggested.

She basically told us to reduce the fibre in his diet. We've done this for a week now and he is basically the same, if not slightly worse. Still doing 4-5 poos a day, still small. On the occasion that he does a big poo (2-3times a week) he is actually screaming when it comes out and is really struggling to push it out So I am now thinking along the lines of constipation. I have considered constipation before but dismissed it as his poo's were never hard, always soft just lots of them. They still aren't hard and dry but clearly hurting him.

I have reduced acidic foods in his diet to see if that stops the poo burning his bum. What do you guys think? I don't really want to take him back to the GP as I don't have a whole lot of confidence in her and she said if it doesn't improve with low fibre to take him to a paediatric dietician privately.

Hope that someone can help us

I don't really know as I don't have any experience with this but I didn't read any mention of liquid intake. Maybe he needs to drink more fluids in addition to reducing his fibre intake?

Sorry should have put that in. I estimate he drinks about 600-700 mls of water a day and probably about 200-300mls of milk. Plus then what he gets from food. From what I read and hear from Plunket I think this is about right. Not really sure how I'd get more fluid into him though. He has a sippy cup readily available and drinks every time he eats as well as throughout the day.

i dont know if this helps at all but if i have to do a *ahem* larger BM then it blardy hurts me too even if it isnt dry, i would up liquids where possible or give something like lactulose if you can to see if that will help.. i'm not a dr though so perhaps discuss using lactulose with your bubbys GP.. not sure how young its okay to give.

I'm no expert, but if you think that he might be constipated, then perhaps it could be overflow diarrhoea, which can occur with constipation... (google it for explanation...)
Might be worthwhile to get GP to have a wee feel of his tum - they'll likely be able to palpate any mass (of poo) in there. Or, sometimes they order an x-ray to see if someone is bunged up.

If it is constipation+overflow diarrhoea, then you'd presumably need to increase, rather than decrease, fibre...

ETA: I'm not sure if overflow D would cause the sore bottom....might do, if it's a bit more acidic or something...?? Who knows....might be worth arming yourself with a bit of knowledge, you can ask specific questions at the doctors... :-) Good luck.

Could the pain be from a tear - this can happen if constipated??? Just a thought. Good luck with GP if going.

Constipation... the bane of my existence!
I can honestly say I know FAR TOO MUCH about Poo!

My little girl has a rare chromosome syndrome, so she has low muscle tone. This makes BM very difficult for her.
There are so many things we do to try and help.
I realise that the reasons for our littlies problems are different but I hope that I can help.

First things first... did you know that foods high in pectin can cause constipation? Banana and Apple are the WORST culprits, so I'd remove them from bubs diet first. at least till things are sorted. Pear is AMAZING and makes a great base for meals.
Kumera too is a great food. Lots of nutients but wont block bub up. (I prefer the orange ones).

My little girl is on lactulose about 12mls a day. Only because we have to be on it, Latulose worked by grabbing all the fluids in the body and sending it to the bowel. So bub would need alot more fluid than average and in my experience I have to keep upping the lactulose to make it work :-( not ideal. Don't get me wrong, it is a great short term solution. Though I fear we may be on it long term.
Kiwifruit is AMAZING... at the supermarket you can buy "KiwiCrush" it is a Kiwifruit concentrate (in the frozen dept). A breakfast of Pear, KiwiCrush, Prunes and Rice porridge is what my little girl starts her day on.

My advice would be to add some or all of these into bubs diet, removing all gluten and dairy products ( that so often cause havoc). Re introducing these once bubs is doing better, but only one at a time to see if they are the culprits.

I have a friend who has a very low muscle tone girl and she has finally managed to remove lactulose entirely from her diet by using LOTS of Acupuncture, diet control and an amazing Chinese herb with Rhubarb extract.

I honestly don't think that removing fibre is the way to go... I suspect that finding out the offending food that is causing the problem is more likely to be the solution.

Doctors are always right.... My Doctor told me it wouldn't be a problem much long as my daughter would be up running around soon!!!! My Daughter may never walk... I was so mad, I just stood up and walked out. And found a good Doctor.

I HOPE that I have been able to help you.

Hmmm one last thing... it might be too gross for you.. But when DD is trying to poo, and is struggling. I help her by lubing up a cotton bud and inserting it. By moving it in little circles it opens her anus and that pretty well always helps her along. LOL it is something I NEVER thought I would have to do!!!!

Good luck in your journey... I hope that I have been able to help.

Like I said at the start, I now know TOO much about Poo!
