How would you feel if you were invited to a 21st where alcohol wasn't paid for, but was available at the bar for pub prices?

We are doing it ourselves so can't afford a lot.... Just hire + food + non alcoholic drinks will be stretching the budget a bit.... It would be stated on the invites that alcoholic drinks are available at the bar (or something to that effect)

TBH i wouldnt really care. But im not a big drinker. I wouldnt mind at all if it was a close friend/family and i knew there circumstances. But if it was a friend i dont often see id maybe show up for a drink or 2 then leave. I wouldnt spend much.

Is there anyway you can subsidize drinks. $2 beers/wines?

we had mine at the Glengary pub in invers.
I got free room hire as long as I put some money on the bar but i dont know if they had a limit on the 'some'

But as for attending and buying drinks, ive been to 3 like that this year and it was fine.
cant expect everyone to pay for drinks, not given the fact that prices for everything are going up

I think it's fine as long as you know in advance, so letting everyone know it's a cash bar like Halted said is a good option.

My father was going to put money on the bar for my 21st as part of my gift, and that is what I told everyone cause they were all going to pay a set price for the meal which everyone was happy with and then my Dad changed his mind and said it would be better for everyone to pay $2 per drink so the bar tab lasted longer and then the bar tender started charging full price. I was so annoyed and embarrassed cause I knew there were people there who couldn't afford it and were told they wouldn't have to pay.

LOL now its bugging me again

I think just as long as you state what it is going to be its not an issue. I know people were happy to pay a set price at my party cause they had plenty of notice.

It's perfectly fine as everyone has said as long as people know then they're usually fine with it.

When I went to 21sts it was either cash bar or byo at the person's home. Don't think people expect free alcohol these days.

I think its becoming more and more common nowadays however I think if it is a buy your own drink situation then you should also put on the invite that you don't expect a gift...

Totally normal, who can afford free drinks anyway!? My 21st i didnt even hire a venue we did a 'around the world' pub crawl (irish, mexican, kareoke bar, sake bar, russian, german & NZ bars) so drinks had nothing to do with me at all

Perfectly fine. Although like someone else said would be better if it was BYO venue!

A friend I used to work with actually paid a 2k bar tab for her 21st and her 'friends' ended up trashing the place so she had to pay extra on top of that for damage.

Tbh I would do as the others have said. The 21st we've attended have all been like that where you either byo or pay for your own.

DP is about to turn 21 in a couple of months and I know some peoples parents pay for the 21st but coming from a big family he has to pay for it himself so he isn't doing a bar tab but his friend had a 21st last weekend and he managed to score a 50% off voucher for a bar tab and he did that for his party.

I went to 21st most weekends over 3 years (Dps friends then my friends!) and not once did any of them have 'free drinks!' - most at bars did discounted drinks either beer or wine or a mix of drinks. Most 21st ive attended at houses has been byo or some drinks supply and then byo?
I had mine at a Bar/Pub and did Discount drinks so a certain amount was put on tab and people paid 3dollars (about half price) for drinks until it run out (tho my parents did top it up think they ended up paying $1800) we had bar vodka, bourdons, wine and 3 type of bottled beer. There was no hire charge either just a min of $500 pn a bartab and could be spend how we wanted. ooo and we also did free non alcaholic (which i made the most of since i was 13weeks preg!)

I guess it goes along way with discounted drinks if thats an opition my tab also included 21 shoots my dp did for me! and also i had about 100 people there.

I think that it is pretty standard and expected nowdays that parties aren't a free-for-all. You generally expect to pay for something whether it be the meal or alcohol or at someones house and you BYO plate or drinks.
I think it would be fine as others have said, just mention it is a cash bar on the onvite to avoid confusion.

Oh and Happy Birthday!
Lindsey

That sounds fine. Most parties at bars you pay for drinks yourself, and if there is a bar tab its gone so quickly anyway!
